What's a song in which the music and the lyrics complement each other perfectly?

edited February 2021 in General

This isn't really a cuddle-related post, but I've seen plenty of off-topic discussions on here, so here's mine! =)

Are there any songs that you enjoy because the lyrics seem like they wrote themselves? Like the music was composed first, and even if there were no lyrics, anyone could just listen to the music and automatically hear those lyrics?

This is mine. The music has so much soul, desire, and heartache, that when I hear it, the first thing I think is "Bring it back, baby!" before the first word is even sung! Like I said, the music just screams the lyrics. If I'd never heard the song and had to sing it improvisationally (sp?) in karaoke, I'm pretty sure I'd automatically sing Catherine's lyrics.

Not to mention I just absolutely love the song. Catherine Russell has such an amazing and soulful voice, and the band's soul matches hers perfectly. It's like they were made for each other, they fit each other almost like they were cuddling! =) It also just makes me want to do the mooch (a blues idiom dance, look it up if you've never heard of it)! Even if I'm sitting still, I can't help but move around in my chair. Here's the song below:

Anyway, enough about this perfect song...what's a song like this for you? Not just any song you love, but one in which the music just feels like it wrote the lyrics itself?

  • "Mooche"...hadn't heard of it, so I looked it up...

  • Yep, that's it! I love dancing the mooch(e), and blues dancing in general. I've never seen it spelled with an E at the end though!

  • Johnny Cash - Hurt

  • Overjoyed - Stevie Wonder

  • @BrianL Great choice! He does just sound hurt at the beginning...and hopeless. Then at the end he just gets angry. I've always liked Johnny Cash's later music more than his earlier music. He had more soul to his voice in his older years.

  • Tori Amos “Me and a Gun”

  • @FunCartel Wow, I'm not sure what to make of the lyrics...but I love how it's all an a cappella solo. You don't hear those much anymore.

Uh, she was raped in real life and she is recounting it. It is just her. No music. Just conveying the horror of the moment through what she was thinking. The Jesus part near the end is a reference that she is the daughter of a minister and God and his flock did nothing for her after the event except tell her to pray. Naturally she has rejected religion.

Puccini: Madama Butterfly / Act 2 - Un bel dì vedremo - Renee Fleming

    Italian Text
    Un bel dì, vedremo
    levarsi un fil di fumo
    sull'estremo confin del mare.
    E poi la nave appare.
    Poi la nave bianca
    entra nel porto,
    romba il suo saluto.

    Vedi? È venuto!
Io non gli scendo incontro. Io no.
Mi metto là sul ciglio del colle e aspetto,
    e aspetto gran tempo
    e non mi pesa,
    la lunga attesa.

    E uscito dalla folla cittadina,
    un uomo, un picciol punto
    s'avvia per la collina.
    Chi sarà? chi sarà?
    E come sarà giunto
    che dirà? che dirà?
    Chiamerà Butterfly dalla lontana.
    Io senza dar risposta
    me ne starò nascosta
    un po' per celia
e un po' per non morire
    al primo incontro;
    ed egli alquanto in pena
    chiamerà, chiamerà:
    "Piccina mogliettina,
    olezzo di verbena"
i nomi che mi dava al suo venire.
    (a Suzuki)
    Tutto questo avverrà,
    te lo prometto.
    Tienti la tua paura,
    io con sicura fede l'aspetto.

English Translation of "Un bel di, vedremo"
One good day, we will see
    Arising a strand of smoke
Over the far horizon on the sea
    And then the ship appears
And then the ship is white
It enters into the port, it rumbles its salute.

Do you see it? He is coming!
I don't go down to meet him, not I.
I stay upon the edge of the hill
And I wait a long time
but I do not grow weary of the long wait.

And leaving from the crowded city,
    A man, a little speck
    Climbing the hill.
Who is it? Who is it?
    And as he arrives
What will he say? What will he say?
He will call Butterfly from the distance
    I without answering
    Stay hidden
    A little to tease him,
A little as to not die.
    At the first meeting,
    And then a little troubled
He will call, he will call
    "Little one, dear wife
    Blossom of orange"
The names he called me at his last coming.
    (To Suzuki)
    All this will happen,
    I promise you this
    Hold back your fears -
I with secure faith wait for him.

    Krieg, by Wumpscut.

    Und auf einmal war Krieg
    Wir kannten ihn nicht mehr
    In Vergessenheit geraten
    War auf einmal ein Krieg
    Und auf einmal war Krieg
    Unsre Kinder sind Tod
Verbrannt in Ruinen hinterlassen vom Krieg

    War

    Und auf einmal war Krieg
    Und die Mütter sie schrie'n
    Nach Rache und Vergeltung
    Nach einem neuen Krieg
    Und auf einmal
    Und auf einmal
    Und erneut kommt ein Krieg
    Bringt Verderben und Tod
    Und Du kämpfst allein
    Wenn erneut kommt ein Krieg

    War

    Alles Leben ist Krieg
    Alles Leben ist Pein
    Und Du kämpfst allein
    Deinen eigenen Krieg
    Das ist Krieg

Clint eastwood by gorillaz comes to mind

  • @littermate This is a great one! I'm not the biggest fan of heavy metal and/or hard rock music, but this is an exception. In fact, Disturbed is one of the only metal bands I actually enjoy. I like how they're able to make music that is intense, but unlike most metal music, it isn't just pure screaming, and this song is the perfect example.

But yes, the way that he sings so intensely yet not necessarily loudly does perfectly communicate the message he's trying to get across with the lyrics.

  • @HugAnEwok I'm not either, but this song does me in. None of there other stuff does, but this one does. I think this song transmits a kind of masculine our world needs. It's SOLID. I love it. Thanks for commenting. :)

    Black Betty by Ram Jam

  • Crimson flames tied through my ears, rollin' high and mighty traps
Pounced with fire on flaming roads using ideas as my maps
"We'll meet on edges, soon, " said I, proud 'neath heated brow
Ah, but I was so much older then, I'm younger than that now
Half-wracked prejudice leaped forth, "rip down all hate, " I screamed
Lies that life is black and white spoke from my skull, I dreamed
Romantic facts of musketeers foundationed deep, somehow
Ah, but I was so much older then, I'm younger than that now
Girls' faces formed the forward path from phony jealousy
To memorizing politics of ancient history
Flung down by corpse evangelists, unthought of, though somehow
Ah, but I was so much older then. I'm younger than that now
A self-ordained professor's tongue too serious to fool
Spouted out that liberty is just equality in school
"Equality, " I spoke the word as if a wedding vow
Ah, but I was so much older then, I'm younger than that now
In a soldier's stance, I aimed my hand at the mongrel dogs who teach
Fearing not that I'd become my enemy in the instant that I preach
My existence led by confusion boats, mutiny from stern to bow
Ah, but I was so much older then, I'm younger than that now
Yes, my guard stood hard when abstract threats too noble to neglect
Deceived me into thinking I had something to protect
Good and bad, I define these terms quite clear, no doubt, somehow
Ah, but I was so much older then I'm younger than that now

    Unsexy by Alanis Morisette
It's a flowy song that's light and airy while still in the Alanis genre and also it's such a good song for showing your love for the person you love, it gives you butterflies in your stomach and makes you think of the person <3

  • The lyrics on top of the hip hop / jazz influence, truly a masterpiece imo.
