I was actually fortunate enough to meet Mr Adams, and I got to ask him if my theory about the inspiration for "42" was correct?
He was happily astonished, and gave me a handshake and a "Yes, that is exactly what inspired it."
It is a reference to Jackie Robinson.
The "answer", according to Mr Adams (and I agree), is that equal opportunity makes everything better.
(Maybe he was simply being kind. Perhaps he shook a lot of hands and said, "You got it exactly right." to a lot of random questioners... But the happy astonishment certainly seemed genuine. And it's a great memory, so what the heck, right?)
