Playing musical instruments whilst cuddling

Depending on the instrument(s) this could be fun, amusing, or downright dangerous. It might be possible with a piano or a pair of kazoos. Full drum sets could cause stick injuries in all but the most skillful percussicuddlers.

Yes!!! I am a musician and have been known to add 🎷to my sessions if certain my partner genuinely wants it!

I have been known to play my frame drum while others lean/cuddle/snuggle up to me.

One of my family party tricks is to put babies to sleep, softly playing while they lay on my chest, inside the bell of sound.

It’s a strange skill set, but I can use my music to cause others to fall asleep.

Pre-pandemic I was also volunteering with a few hospice organizations helping terminal patients work through anxiety, relax, and sleep.

So, drumming and cuddling can certainly happen together, depending on the drum.

It’s also a lot of fun to rhythmically massage/caress someone you are cuddling.

If you can find their rhythm you can find out first hand if they snore or drool while napping.

(I also suspect that it would be useful as atmospherics for a cuddle party…)

@CharlesThePoet That's awesome! I'm especially moved by your comment about hospice work. While I don't imagine that you're cuddling the dying, I can certainly see how music would be a kind of embrace. I have great respect to the people who bring support and dignity to the process of dying.

You know what? I'd play a kazoo duet while cuddling. Why not?

@FunCartel He's holding hands with himself: that's a sort of cuddle. Incidentally, I once heard someone play Bohemian Rhapsody that way.

Yeah all this is great although it’d really be hard to play the gueetar while someone’s lying on your chest, lol.

@CharlesThePoet I guess a frame drum would be like a bodhran? Do you play with your fingers or a mallet? What kind of music would you play with it? Also kudos on your hospice work, that is really admirable.

I would definitely cuddle with some type of hand percussion (I'm a drummer). That could be very relaxing. I recently got a metal tongue drum to mess around with, and it produces some very nice, mellow tones. Or... maybe when it's time for the cuddling to end, I could go into an upbeat, dancey number 😄

@JoyfulHeart As far as playing guitar while cuddling I think the learning curve for two people playing the same guitar would be pretty high but....hear me out... you get yourself a DOUBLE-neck guitar so you can each play your own parts! Now that's a cuddle match made in prog rock heaven 🤘

@22cuddle Yes, the bodhran is one of the many varieties of frame drum. It’s played with a tipper, or type of mallet.

I tend to play frame drums from the “Silk Road”, so things like the Tar (basic 22” diameter drum, about 2.5” deep), the Bendir (a Tar with a snare built in), the Daf (a Tar with chains inside) and the Riqq (a Tar with zills in the frame, or a large tambourine).

I play traditional style, which is all hand and finger striking, while holding it upright in your hands.

Some people, such as Glen Velez, play lap style, literally resting it on their laps while sitting.

Others, such as David Kucherrman, play floor style, placing it upright on the floor, leaned up against their lower legs.

@CharlesThePoet cool, I will look into those. It was the idea of playing a drum such that it could put a baby to sleep which intrigued me lol. I will look for some videos on those types of drums, thanks for the names and info

This seems like such a lovely idea and @CharlesThePoet it would be so cool to have some different instruments (percussion is my fav as well) set up in a room that was part of a cuddle party. BRILLIANT!!! Music on any level adds such a dimension to a snuggle. Instruments, radio, playlists, voice..... Love love love this idea! 🥰😊😊

@sillysassy The fun and beauty in language have always intrigued me. Also, I have found that the right words can be just as healing as a hug. The traumas that I experienced as a child centered around touch (or lack of it), and unkind words. I managed to choose a wife who would continue similar trauma rather than supporting me in the healing process. This website has been a safe place for me in the 5 years since my divorce. The hugs I've received, and simple kind words like yours have helped to reverse a lot of damage and now I'm able to give love to myself.

I recognize this has nothing to do with the original topic of this thread, but I couldn't leave it unsaid, and besides, I gave myself permission to hijack it.

Awwwww @JoyfulHeart I am so glad to be part of the solution instead of part of the problem. I am sad for your pain and others who have to experience that in any part of their lives but so so so thankful for a platform like this to find healing even if it is just a connection through cyberspace!!!! Learning to love yourself sometimes has to be mirrored to us doesn't it? There are some amazing examples on here. HIJACK AWAY!!! It's YOUR thread. 😂

Oh you drummers!!! I have a dream of one day laying in the lap, or across the chest, of a drummer and having them "play me" by thumpity-thumping complex rhythms all over my back, shoulders and arms!!
