Do You Have a Secret Weapon?

[Deleted User]CharlesThePoet (deleted user)

I have a day to day secret weapon in making it to every tomorrow, no matter how terrible today was.

The dishes.

Anyone that has ever lived with me knows about me and dishes.

I specialize in dishes.

I truly love doing them.

It’s a nearly spiritual thing for me.

You see, when I was a young kid I got “stuck” with dishes as my daily chore.

I was BITTER.

My grandmother straightened me out as if she were suddenly a Zen Monk.

A lot about service, and flow, and the sacredness of good soap, and the connection of each drop of water to each motion of my hand and each moment of my life.

She made it all make SENSE.

So I love doing dishes.

It’s a moment of control, and respite, and meditation, each day.

And, not least of the benefits is, while I know she really isn’t, it feels like my Grandma is right there grinning.

And that feeling, that connection, that being useful to my home, is more than enough for me.

On my very best days I remember to approach all of my work as if I was doing dishes.

Focused, happy, relaxed, and proud to be of service.

What is your day to day secret for making it to tomorrow?

Tea, sketching, sketching tea cups, painting with tea, painting pictures of tea cups with (you guessed it) tea. Honestly, I think tea is what helped me through my postpartum depression and continues to remind me to breathe and take care of myself as a single mom of young kiddos.

I’m with @pmvines a good cup of coffee and just relaxing or reading a book.

  • Either playing an outdoor game (preferably Cricket) or just hanging out friends.

  • I nurture other living things. Plants, animals, people. The garden needs water, the animals need cared for. There are things that depend on me. On the worst of days, when I'd let myself just wither, I know that I can't do that to them.

  • Books, saxophones, naps — and cooking (perfect excuse to escape awkward moments at holiday gatherings)!

  • Faith 🙏

    @MandoMania Amen. 🙌🏻

@CharlesThePoet I resonate with you so much on dishes, though for different reasons I guess. I hated doing dishes and even flat out refused. When I was growing up and learning about chores and adulthood, I wanted to be the woman in the kitchen, without being the woman doing the dishes. Now as a woman coping with the ill effects of depression, I find doing the dishes is a “reset” for me. An opportunity to get the littlest thing done for myself, when all else seems impossible.

Thanks for this thread and thanks to everyone contributing!
