Mmm, all of it! I haven't had a steak in a few years, I do miss it. But it's expensive to get these days. If anyone ends up travelling to Alberta, you simply must try our steaks and beef. It's AAA and truly unlike any other place on Earth, among the best. My grandmother who was well travelled globally said that no matter what continent she went to, she missed Albertan beef terribly.

Though I am a flexitarian and have reduced my meat consumption significantly over the last 1.5 years, I consider meat dishes a delicacy at this point to be enjoyed only occasionally. I dig in after taking a moment to thank the animal for its life (because you know the meat industry isn't doing that). I only go out of my way to eat meat when out at a place and there is no vegetarian option that I want, or when I get a huge craving.

Admittedly I've been eating a lot of pizza and burgers lately. I'm preparing to move into my new place for September and my parents' condo where I'm currently staying is being sold. So with everything all clean and emptied out and a good portion of the utilities disconnected, and me hardly being home except to sleep, I get lazy and order in. Or order food while I'm on the go for my job as a typist. Been spending a lot of time chilling and working at McDonald's lately since the Subway near me has no outlets for my laptop. Their iced coffees aren't bad!

  • Dude. Only two choices?

    Food is LIFE.

    • Pasta (mac and cheese, spaghetti, ravioli, cannoli, fettuccini, and then there are the grains, like couscous, quinoa, etc)
    • German/French/European bread, Lavash, Naan, Pita...
    • Grilled veggies (peppers, onions, broccoli, squash, zucchini, etc)
    • Soups (Pozole verde, pasta fagiolli, Hot & Sour, Miso...)
    • Burritos, Tacos, Enchiladas - as long as they're not Taco Bell
    • Desserts - I could write a novel on these merits, starting with Chocolate Chocolate Cake.

    Lunchtime beckons.

I lived in Southern California for almost 20 years so I developed a major addiction to the legendary

Humans cultivate around 2,000 species of plant alone for food. Many of these have several cultivars. Then of course we eat bacterial, algal, fungal and animal products as well. And I'm sure some others I don't know about. Call it at least 10,000 basic food items all-in?

  • All of the above!

@CuddleDuncan, while it’s true that humans cultivate thousands of species of plants for food, we tend to eat the same dozen or so over and over. It’s kind of like the clothes in our closet - we wear 10% of them 90% of the time.

  • I've become a hummus addict, but right now my refrigerator is suffering from hummuslessness.

  • @JoyfulHeart Ooooo, you need to make some of that! I should make some of that actually. I found a big old jar of tahina (sesame paste for those who don't know what that is) that I cleaned out of the cupboard the other night. I bought it in 2018. never got used and sadly expired in 2020... this comment is confirmation I need to get more hummus in my life.

  • Very hard to choose from the 3, but I love burgers 🤤

  • None of the above. Try to eat plant based as much as possible although I love basted cauliflower steaks.

  • I’m a big soups guy. Pho, ramen, soondubu, chicken noodle soup, i like it all.

  • Burger and steak for me. I only really enjoy pizza when I'm visiting NY and getting real NY pizza, not the fake poser pizza advertised as "Real NY Pizza" offered at pizza joints here in Vegas.

  • I love food. 😁

  • I used to be a butcher so I learned quite a bit about steak. Give me a 1 and a half inch thick fatty prime rib steak medium rare with a peppercorn sauce and red wine au jus topped with glazed onions and some asparagus and red pepper, heavily buttered garlic mashed potatoes ……. And apparently I know what my last meal in prison would be 😳 (and key lime pie for dessert…. With a raspberry coulis)…

@Sheena123 These forums are supposed to be platonic, yes? Because that kind of comment needs to be rated NSFW...

    ;)

  • @CharlesThePoet that’s some sexy food right there isn’t it? 😂😂

  • @Spud424 That's a mandatory stop when I work in CA - animal style!

  • @Sheena123 officially wins this thread. ☺️

  • Lol 😂

    Ahem**

Thank you, thank you! I accept this (hopefully) edible award. I’d like to thank cows for their involuntary contribution. They’re the real heroes 💖

  • @Sheena123 - that sounds AMAZING.

  • @Sideon it’s simply divine 💖💖

    Broccoli with cheese sauce

  • @Chris55555 Maybe I'm the only one who remembers? Maybe not? Those little Green Giant broccoli and cheese bags that you threw in the microwave for like 4 minutes. Oh my lanta, throw a hot potato in there, pour it up and dig the heck in! <3

    Parma-Gone?

I found something out that was a bit initially disappointing the other day - that parmesan cheese is made from animal rennet, which I thought was something I couldn't eat. My being flexitarian essentially means I don't go out of my way to eat anything that has died to make its way onto my plate. However, I can still eat dairy (though try to avoid it since it doesn't agree with my skin). I don't eat eggs much anymore, because, well, when you think about it, eggs are kinda gross in my opinion.

Well, I thought animal rennet was something that it wasn't, till I did more research. It's basically just an enzyme found in the stomachs of living young goats, sheep, and cows. But Google was telling me parm isn't vegetarian, which is false. Calves are killed for meat - not rennet. Rennet is just a harvested by-product that is making more use of the animal. Besides this fact, it seems a large amount of North American cheeses that require rennet go for the microbial, plant-based variety these days that is cultured using a type of mold.

Sometimes it's tough trying to figure out what you can and cannot, or should and should not be eating when you're transitioning into a new way of eating. Hello, not all of us veggies and flexis nix all animal by-products; we're not necessarily vegans or striving to be!
