"You cannot send a message to new user here. This member is currently receiving a lot of messages. To make things a little more comfortable for them, we are temporarily only allowing messages from those who are nearby. You can try contacting them again in the future."
Does it fix a problem that used-to exist, or still exists? I've heard of throttling people, but not like this. (grin)

    Some time within the last year I heard that mentioned so it’s been around for a bit but I don’t know for how long. Probably not a bad idea. I got something like a dozen messages within 30 minutes when I first signed up and I signed up late at night. It was overwhelming.

    This is a normal, automated message-throttling process by the site. The admins posted about it a while ago, and at that time the threshold was quite high. It's an old procedure, although I think the threshold may have been lowered a couple of times. The message you received does what it says on tin, you can try again in a few days .... although I would wait till the person have logged on again, they may have been scared off, sadly. The chance of your message being read isn't that high, however.

    It is normal for some new users to receive a large number of messages. It's a real problem for the community.

    I'm just in the occasional habit of welcoming new people to the sight. I do it frequently.

    I get appreciative feedback. Perhaps because I just greet and don't set any other expectations.

    That said, I guess this is protecting new people, from ME! ... OK (grin).

    I'll let you know at my semi-occasional annual meeting.
    I probably greet one new person every day-or-three. (more specifics on this will also be communicated at the meeting.)

    New joiners of the website that have received many messages you may find this throttle comes into action - as Babi says its a way to prevent new members from being overwhelmed, and actually increases likelihood of them hanging around and replying. Imagine joining a site and getting 50 messages within the first hour, each message sending an email notification, some from people that live in a different state or country etc - this is overwhelming and can be a fairly typical scenario for some accounts. So in that instance we temporarily limit who is able to message them so they can focus their efforts on people that live close, etc.
