The Atari 2600 developers had to program their games to set the color of the pixel they wanted the TV to draw in real time. Like, while the TV tube moved in rows like a typewriter. They couldn't just store the frame they wanted to draw in memory because the 2600 had 128 bytes of memory. All the updates to the game's state, enemy behavior determination, etc had to be done while the TV was moving from the lower right back to the upper left of the screen.

  • I've watched this before, super fascinating!!
