First I have it my filters set on those who can host (since I can't, but someday when I can I know I'll have more options), then by price, then by distance. However I do definitely take into consideration karma, well filled out profiles, and of course I would hope pros would have pictures up. Every now and then if I find a very interesting profile that isn't nearby, I may send a message in hopes that they will let me know if they are traveling to my area (and able to host while doing so).
I then go by the feel I'm getting from a message. Those that are all 100% business I may still consider seeing, but usually am more likely to choose one that is friendly and gets to know me without pressure. I've had some really nice conversations from pros that make me wish either they came to my area or that I could easily afford to travel everywhere to meet them.
Spontaneous pooping abilities

I like to look at their comments on the forum threads. That strategy doesn’t work for all pros, so for a lot of pros I will do a shorter first session to try them out.

@jplemmon good point. I have looked at some prospective pros and their bio is nothing but a list of "no _____". That screams issues there and don't want to deal with someone else's issues and triggers... Looking for someone radiating positive vibes.
@fieldofdreams you wouldn't think they are coming off too strong in doing that? I feel like it might say, "Hey, you should cuddle me and pay me." I prefer not to be demanding and make it 100% their choice but if you think it isn't so bad then please eloborate on best way to do that.
