What's going on in France?

Anyone from France here? I've seen some pretty crazy videos of the riots going on. Seems like the country is up in flames.

  • Not from France but following the news.long story short : they're having some sort of a George Floyd moment apparently. Just Google it. Its all over

  • Don't worry about it. It's a French summer tradition, they do it every few years.

  • LOL. You're a neigbour you must know better than us .

  • Normally it keeps going until they get a really solid spell of rain.

A 17 year old was shot and killed during a traffic stop due to excessive use of lethal force by police. The police then lied about it being self-defense, but video and witness testimony has since proven otherwise. Like in the US, France and much of Europe has seen an increase in racial tensions and police violence against unarmed POC the past several years, and this murder was a catalyst for widespread protests much like George Floyd was here.

The protests have also escalated to rioting, much like it did here in early summer 2020. As @CuddleDuncan pointed out in jest, rioting historically tends to happen more frequently during heat waves. Rising temperatures and humidity has been correlated to increased aggression, hostility, impulsivity, and less empathy - perhaps explaining why many of the periods of urban civil unrest have occured during the hottest parts of the year. Consider many of the Detroit/NYC/Harlem race riots, Stonewall riots (that Pride Month commemorate), the draft riots, and the more recent BLM protests turned riots.

  • It's just peaceful protesting. It'll blow over. Or they'll break out the guillotines again.
