Importance of Lyrics

Hey guys

I made sure with the owner Mark that I could talk about a song I just put out. I wanted to make sure it wasn’t seen as promotion but it’s also an important song for me because of the little story behind it. For context, you can find it here:

I hope that link works. If not, PM me and I’ll tell you how to listen to it. It’s a song I made called “Prayer in the Dark”. It was cowritten with someone else and it originally had a religious sort of vibe to it but because it was something I was a part of, I wanted to alter it to be more about me being my own hero as opposed to relying on something out there to save me.

Like when you have two sides of yourself battling each other. One side wants to be happy while the other side just seems to refuse to see the good in anything. You’re in a dark corner and you have to turn around to see the lighter side of the room.

Basically be your own hero, turn around to see the good around you and try to get yourself out of the darkness. Conquer it and fight.

Do any of you have a song that has important lyrics that really speak to you and help try to get you out of a dark place?

    Absolutely 100% yes. Two songs actually. The first puts me squarely in the "geek" camp, but I figure that's obvious by now.

    The first one is "Mal's Song" by Vixy & Tony, which captures the theme and beauty of the show Firefly . . . lordy, I wish that show could somehow come back. Often makes me cry just a bit.

    Anyways, the second one is Neil Diamond's "Coming to America". My family is immigrants on both sides, and this song resonates so deeply for me because I know that for all our faults, ours is a country where a person can come here with nothing but the clothes they're wearing, can't speak English, etc, and use the opportunities we have to build a good life, personal wealth, provide for their children, and more.

    I have a lot of songs that speak to me. I have a depression playlist that's currently at 54 songs. I don't think any of them actually help me get out of a dark place. Rather, it's about being understood, being seen while in a dark place. To have something that expresses how I feel without me having to try to do it myself. And they may not necessarily get me out of a dark place, but they keep me from going to a darker place.

    @jubal honestly, it’s so upsetting that they cancelled that show. 🥲🥲 and having a song based on starting a whole new life in a whole new territory is awesome. I’m sure it helps put things into perspective and give you a drive.

    @Unscented_Lemon sometimes we just need to feel those feelings. I myself always need a good cry and just sit and think about all the garbage happening around me. If I feel I’ve gone a bit too long without emoting, I’ll deliberately put on a song with some strong sad lyrics to bring some emotion out in me

    @TxTom thank you 😊 no, I just did the singing and some of the written lyrics. I’m a drummer too but no way can I sing and play drums at the same time 😅😅😅

    Wow. I really like this song. I transcribed the lyrics so I could read them a few times (I like to do that to really think about the message of a song).

    I actually relate to this song quite a bit. I often feel pretty hopeless and unable to get away from my demons, the things I keep doing that I don't want to.

    This reminds me of another song. Anyone (link). I have always liked this song because it's paradoxically beautiful and sad at the same time.

    You asked about lyrics that help to get out of a dark place. There are a couple that come to mind for me.

    Being of the belief that Jesus has given me (and anyone who wants it) a hope to get out of my darkness - these songs talk about that. :)

    One is Yet I Sin (link). This song paints a picture of a paradox, that on one hand I am working to escape my demons/sin, but on the other hand (or at other times), I keep going back to it.

    Another is Living Hope (link). This song paints a picture of a Bible verse (1 Peter 1:3, link) that I have hope because of Jesus, who defeated death by being raised from death to life. (Hence a "living" person who provides hope). And the song joyfully celebrates that.

    P.S. in case it sounds otherwise - I don't intend to push my beliefs on others here. While I do sincerely believe these things (and even hope they might help someone), I was also interested and encouraged to read several of the comments here about how others cope with life.

    @donhulio I love that you have such a deep appreciation for songs in a way that mentally, emotionally and spiritually get you in a positive mindset! It’s so important to keep reminding yourself through the bad, there is good and meaning to it all! 🌸🌸🌸
