@HarleyGirlKate Ooo, I completely missed that there was a new edition coming out! 🤩 I heard there was some talk of changing the designation "half ___" so one half doesn't always have to be human, did that happen in this edition? And yeah, makes sense I suppose, escapism is easiest when you're unrecognizable 🤷🏼 But it's still kinda disappointing they didn't put more depth into humans.
I love using this question as a nerdy icebreaker, especially because it can be as simple or in depth as you'd like. Plus it's a surprisingly accurate way to get to know people 🤘🏻
@Runawaycuddles: They got rid of the "half-" races in the PHB. So now you can be an Elf, Orc, or Human, but no mixed races. I believe it came out a couple of months ago.
I'm looking forward to playing in a game starting up next week. I'm going to play a human cleric. We rolled for stats and I got very lucky with my rolls ending up with a character with high wisdom who also happens to have very high physical stats as well. I'm going to run her as a martial priestess. She is going to worship an earth goddess, and despite her training she is extremely kindly, goes out of her way to help people and would much rather not fight and doesn't see violence as her first way to resolve conflict. Her betters approve of this very much. Should be fun since all of the other players will be theater kids.
Yes, it was a fun, nerdy icebreaker. I thought the gal who suggested we guess instead of just telling each other was inventive and I told her so. You are right, I think you can get a sense of a person by what kind of character they say they are, though so far as alignment goes, in real life I subscribe less to the Alignment System and more toward what the Narn ambassador in Babylon Five said (I paraphrase): "There are three forces in the universe; good, evil, and enlightened self- interest."
I'm of the opinion very few people are either good or evil....
I was never interested in dnd until I after I just happened across and read a book by RA Salvatore, since then I’ve been partial to the virtuous drow types. Drizzt Do’urden was interesting to me.
Sadly never had an opportunity to learn the table top games because they didn’t have that flavor of nerd where I’m from. 😇
@HarleyGirlKate Oh damn! No mixed at all is a bold choice! Probably the easiest to implement though, so it kinda makes sense. 🤔
She sounds so awesome! 🤩 I love it when characters come together so smoothly like that. Especially when they subvert expectations in clever or interesting ways.
Oooo, love that! I totally agree, humans are far too complex to be so easily categorized. It's part of why fantasy is something so many are drawn to, it's another way to express our variance and complexity, even if what that looks like is a goofy murder clown sometimes 😂

I agree, @Runawaycuddles, with the complexity of humans. I'm drawn to those things too and I love characters who express certain stereotypes while having traits you wouldn't expect.
@lovingspoonfull: I enjoyed those books too. A friend of mine likes to play Drizzt when we play D&D boardgames, though he is in his 70s and an ex-marine who both hates the fact that I outranked him in the military (albeit I was never a marine) and he sarcastically "loves it" when I insist on over the top roleplaying when we play versus playing it more old school, dungeon crawl style. Good times and we have a great time with our banter, lol, especially when he's on his third or fourth bourbon.
What edition? I was DM from my teens through college years centered around the World of Greyhawk, all 2nd edition. I played one year of White Wolf's VTM as a Toreador (thank you very much), from sundown to sunup once a month - we played from the Embrace, to fledglings, to recovering our humanity, all while downing soda, pizzas, and an abundance of licorice.

Probably a halfling because I'm so short. 😂 Chaotic good with chaotic neutral tendencies. 😝 As a witch, I'd definitely be magic caster of some kind, but with aspirations of being a fighter or rogue, lol. (I need to keep upping my strength at the gym and gain some more stealth skills. Haha)

I think I'd be a neutral good half-elf human monk, very introspective and pursuing better discipline. Idk the specific class but something dex/wis heavy. Maybe a touch of wizard because I love learning new things.

I never had the imagination or patience for it but Dand D seemed really fun. I did used to be a surrogate boyfriend for someone whose actual boyfriend would spend a day or two at a time playing with his friends. We would go to concerts, movies, dinner etc all so that he could be left alone lol. They ended up getting married and having a baby which put an end to all that
