You’ve all got my admiration. For whatever reason I’ve always had a green thumb with outdoor plants, especially vegetables and herbs, but have not had the same success with houseplants. Although I love what they do to an indoor space.
I want a herb garden in my kitchen so bad 😭😭

Has anyone watered their plants by the bottom? And if so, what are your thoughts on that method of watering?

@MajesticMango yes I’ve watered from bottom but maybe not surprisingly many plants don’t thrive with it. Phrase I heard was “plants don’t like wet feet”. Not sure how the “self watering” pots do it without drowning the plant. Many tropicals did fine.
Best results I ever got with an indoor plant was to use an olla, like I do with outdoor potted plants. It is a small clay vessel that slowly releases water to the soil keeping even moisture. Ollas are a very old method that work great. Especially here in the desert.

@MajesticMango Clay loses water. In a pot that is not really a good thing. That’s why a lot of folks don’t use clay pots in hot climates.
But a clay jar inserted into the soil with only the neck exposed allows that lost moisture to slowly water the soil around it. Makes a potential negative of Terra cotta into a positive.
I have some citrus planted in outdoor pots with ollas near the root balls. I can then water once a week into the olla and the soils stays evenly moist. Before that I had to sometimes water daily in the summer.
