@Gwynne42 I appreciate the thought, but I won't be watching any christmas movies. Well, except maybe two. Hogfather (a Discworld movie, mainly a good parody satire of christmas), and The Hebrew Hammer. Although it's hard to watch the intro for me. I identify with it far too well.
@Ironman294 I love wintery holiday weather! Best cuddle weather. I don’t want to derail the thread but regarding the weather here when I first arrived in August, OMG it was so miserably humid. I went from 115 degrees in Dallas to very uncomfortable, unusually hot here. Fall has been perfect for me, changing colors I don’t see in Texas and chilly but sunny because I prefer cold. Summers in general are difficult for me.

I enjoy Festivus. The airing of grievances is a personal favorite.
@g_w_t_w have you been to The Garden of morning calm? The petite French village which is next door to the petite Italian village? About an hour outside Seoul. Also Nami island is a great place to visit usually in the summer but I’m sure they will have a nice winter activities too!

I forgot to include the classics Rudolph, Frosty, The Year without a Santa Claus, Santa Claus is coming to town, and Inforgetting any others? They don’t make em like they used to. Though Charlie Brown Christmas to me is the standard cartoon! I love Its a wonderful Life, and to me the definitive version of A Christmas Carol is Scrooge (Alastair Sim)
@Ironman294 I love all the movies you mentioned but my new favorite is the Apple Original, “Spirited” with Ryan Reynolds and Will Ferrell. It is a continuation of “A Christmas Carol” and it pays respectful homage to the original while being a very original story / musical.

Actually, there is something positive this year. For Thanksgiving, I'll be going with a friend to a (as they called it) trans cafe that's doing (obviously) a Thanksgiving thing. Never been before, so I have no idea what it will be like, but I might meet some new people. And then I'm taking a quick trip back to Michigan to see a few friends and pick up my swords.
Also, the christmas decorations being out already doesn't seem to be triggering my cptsd yet.
It wouldn't be the holidays if there wasn't a little scarring.

@Mike102 bad experiences and memories can really dwell in you and there’s definitely trauma. But I encourage people to change all that to and make good memories for the future. Like I previously said we all have had some form of trauma, let’s no longer give it power if possible. I didn’t grow up Christian but now are, in a very flawed one but always enjoyed it pre conversion. I want all to have happy holidays. Vince Guaraldi Trio’s score to A Charlie Brown Christmas should put a smile to anyone’s face. Drum up some hot chocolate, cinnamon cookies, a cozy blanket. There’s nothing better.

Some people literally have no good memories of christmas. To me it was a time of hate and intolerance by christians. The rest of the year was too, but it was worse around christmas time. For me, it's just bad memories reinforced by more bad memories reinforced by more bad memories. Despite what some people (none of whom are therapists) think, you don't get past that by just "building new memories". If these people had any understanding of trauma, they would know that.
Anyone who doesn't like christmas for whatever reason is dismissed as a "Scrooge" or worse. They're essentially told to "just get over it" by people who have no idea what they're talking about and only make it worse. It seems like someone not liking christmas threatens their identity as much as transphobic comments do to a transgender person (based on what was said to me in this thread).
I wouldn't have bothered with this thread if it were just about christmas, instead of shoehorning Thanksgiving in when the real intent was just to talk about christmas. I wouldn't have bothered if the OP hadn't included a bit being dismissive of and shaming anyone who doesn't like christmas. But ... well, see above.
And christmas is completely unavoidable. Look how many active threads there are about christmas right now, and it's not even Thanksgiving. One thing I neither want nor need is some lovely person (sarcasm) telling me what a bad person I am for not liking christmas. I see nothing wrong in telling them that the spirit of christmas I experience is hate and intolerance, and they contribute to that.

@IronLemon I highly recommend taking a step back here. This thread wasn't initiated to spread hate or to invalidate anyone's feelings. Although I do understand there was an uncalled for jab in the original post, likely just out of perspective blindness, it didn't warrant your reaction.
I empathize with you and understand your sensitivity towards this topic, but this isn't considerate of others who may want to positively contribute to the thread with their experiences and fond memories. These people are not the people who caused your negative relationship with holidays, so be peaceful and find a separate space to connect with others who have similar experiences as you do and allow people here the same opportunity.
