Sporting green today?

I've never really quite understood the purpose of wearing green oh St Patrick's Day. They always said you'll be pinched otherwise, but assaulting someone for their clothing choices seems a little odd. But it's still a fun day for green milkshakes , beer and corned beef so what the hell, green it is today !

    I appreciate that people want to have fun with it. But I'm not Irish and not a drinker, so I don't know what I'd be celebrating 😆

    Two different backgrounds, and likely a stereotypical mix of the two, VASTLY watered down here in the States, much like Green Beer.

    First, green is associated with the Catholic Church in Ireland, and is a way to know if you are about to commit violence on the “right” wrong person. Protestants wear Orange, of course.

    Secondly, many varieties of Irish “freedom fighters” associate Green with their movements, and use it as basically gang sign.

    Thirdly, connected to a long standing, much morphed, folk song.

    Went to a nursing home to visit a client.
    During St Paddy Day crafts, I noticed a different woman popping glitter shamrock decorations in her mouth. I let the staff know what happened and rushed off to get a paper towel and gloves. We tried to talk her into spitting it out. They took the woman away to extract the glitter snack (tricked her with ice cream) and I played Bing Crosby's "When Irish eyes are smiling"

    Wait for it...

    At the end of all this, the head nurse was on a gripe because it's "not my job"
    Ouch. I did not lay a hand on the lady. I told her so, and that I was the one who noticed she was eating the decorations! Besides that, I kept the rest of the residents entertained while the situation was handled. No, it's not my job. Nobody asked me to help. I didn't even expect a thank you. I honestly would not have handled myself any differently.
    But dang, to be spoken to harshly while doing my very best, that's bullshit.

    @pmvines The folklore suggests that wearing green makes you invisible to leprechauns, mischievous fairy creatures, who were believed to pinch anyone they could see. So wearing green thus protecting you from being pinched!

    I asked my daughter if she wanted to wear green today, but she said no, since she's only a little bit Irish (she's predominantly Haitian, Russian and Italian).
