Self improvement

edited August 2025 in General

After my trip to Dallas, meeting different employees from different parts of the country, seeing different perspectives and opinions, made me reflect on myself. I also spent quite a bit of time alone which facilitated the reflection process. I, like many people even at the age of 53, consider myself a work in progress. I still feel like there is much room for improvement in many aspects of my life. I think one of my biggest areas of opportunity is how I respond to adversity especially preventing my emotions from allowing me to make not necessarily a bad decision but maybe not the best decision. How do you all feel about your lives, are you happy as is or do you see room for improvement? What are your thoughts in general on self improvement?

  • I see a lot of people who are, "keeping up with Joneses," and more often than not skydiving very deep into debt to keep up that appearance of success.

For me, success is surrounded by people who enjoy your company.

With that in mind, I am just trying to be a better person than I was yesterday. I'm constantly improving or working towards improving but it's not my main focus. I'll reflect on the day and see issues I have and try to do better tomorrow.

I'm not on that hustle grind to be most optimal tomorrow, I'm on that, "I'm going to die one day, no need to be stuck in my ways, how could I be a better person for the family and the community as the days pass," grind.

  • My pursuit of growth is one of my biggest sources of joy today. Learning something new is enriching, even if I needed to be proven wrong in the process.

  • Self improvement is very rewarding. I've always tried to be self aware. However, I compartmentalize which makes understanding what I'm feeling even harder. I'm still learning how to navigate emotions. Definitely a work in progress.

Cuddling has actually been a form of self-improvement for me. It has definitely taught me a lot! This sounds very stupid but I didn't realize how complicated men are. I thought platonic relationships were going to be simple & that has not been the case. When emotions are involved whether platonic or romantic things get complicated.

I did not realize that before I started cuddling. My platonic relationships before cuddling were more cut and dry. They were simple to a certain extent. But I guess when you're in intimate situations such as cuddling that changes.

  • I'm going through a stage of reinvention every single moment is improving. It's scary and sobering, kinda like when you are first learning how to ride a bike a you get it... I'm single for the first time since 2005ish. It's hard going from a we to a me but I don't ever want to go back. My notion of success is vastly different than others. I don't really desire to be rich. I would like a little more security but I am pretty happy. A lot more than I used to be.

  • I... consider myself a work in progress.

We all should. The purpose of this life is to improve ourselves so as to be prepared for the next stage of existence.

one of my biggest areas of opportunity is how I respond to adversity...

That's exactly why we "little brains" are here on Earth---learning to overcome adversity and fear. This was explained beautifully in the authoritative movie, Defending Your Life.

How do you all feel about your lives, are you happy as is or do you see room for improvement? What are your thoughts in general on self improvement?

Happiness is a good metric. I'm happy. Self improvement, however, is a perpetual process.
