Oxytocin and touch

We live in an interesting time. Despite how cliche this sounds, "We are the closest we have ever been to our friends and family due to technology but at the same time the farthest away due to technology." it's still true. More people today are lonelier than ever before. In England 1/10 people are often very lonely.

One way to feel connected is to experience a loving touch which releases Oxytocin. Oxytocin is a hormone in our body that releases for many different reasons, one of them being due to positive human touch like hugging. The benefits of having plenty of Oxytocin in the body are not limited to but include an anti-depressant like effect, encouragement to engage in more prosocial behavior, makes us more aware of social cues, and generally happier. This hormone is sometimes called the love hormone because it encourages social bonding, building trust in others, and in the right scenario sexual relationships.

Going without touch can lead to lower levels of Oxytocin. Only staying "in touch" with technology can create a negative feedback loop by avoiding natural touch. Less and less social connections and touching lead to an increase in anxiety and depressive thoughts. This, in turn, makes us less likely to seek out the positive rewards of socializing. Taking away this Oxytocin can lead to mental health issues as a multitude of psychiatric disorders would be improved with an increase in Oxytocin.

So a lack of touch can contribute to a negative feedback loop which makes you less likely to go out and get it. Without proper connections, and touching your risk is becoming more aggressive, depressed, and anxious. Having a cuddle buddy can help solve this issue. While cuddling is great, having a personal connection with your cuddle buddy will do even more for you.
