  • Vanessa Stockard (Australian, born 1975)
    Another Day, Another Chair, 2022
    Oil on dibond panel

    Private collection

Vanessa Stockard is best known for her contemporary figurative paintings that mimic famous artworks from Western art history; each incorporates a small, cheeky portrait of her cat, Kevin.

Working in a Rembrandtesque style, Stockard has replicated paintings by Velázquez, Vermeer, van Eyck, and other masters from the canon. A BFA grad of the University of New South Wales College of Fine Arts, Stockard has exhibited internationally as well as in her native Australia. She is a 2010 recipient of the biennial Stanthorpe Art Prize, awarded by the Stanthorpe Regional Art Gallery.

While her art-historical copies have achieved the greatest attention due to their technical skill and humor, Stockard depicts a wide array of subjects in her oil paintings, each rendered with loose brushwork. These include still lifes and self-portraits, though her black feline makes frequent appearances throughout her portfolio.

  • Differences in the FLOWERS of the Holiday Cactus!🌺

Christmas Cactus – The flowers are usually white or red but occasionally may be yellow. The blooming time is typically in December. The Christmas Cactus has purplish-brown anthers. In contrast the Thanksgiving Cactus has yellow anthers. Flowers are symmetrical being evenly distributed around each flower tube. Easter Cactus – The flowers are royal purple, red or pink and brighter than Christmas Cactus or Thanksgiving Cactus. The flowers are more star-shaped than the other two ‘Holiday Cactus.’ It typically blooms in the spring months of April and May.

Thanksgiving Cactus – The flowers are pink, red, white or yellow and they typically bloom in November. The Thanksgiving Cactus anthers are yellow but they are purplish-brown on the Christmas Cactus. Thanksgiving Cactus flowers are more asymmetrical, protrude from the ovary and extend horizontally from the tips of the stem segments.

    November 19, 1905:
Actress Eleanor Audley, the voices of the wicked Maleficent in Disney's 1959 "Sleeping Beauty" and Lady Tremaine in the 1950 "Cinderella," is born in Newark, New Jersey. For both films, animators Frank Thomas & Marc Davis created the characters' facial features to resemble Audley! She was the original voice of Madame Leota for both Disneyland's & Disney World's Haunted Mansion attractions. Audley was also part of the cast of Disney's television serial "The Swamp Fox" (starring Leslie Nielsen).

Working on radio, screen and television, fans of the 1960s CBS sitcom "Green Acres" may remember Audley for her role of Eunice, Oliver's mother. Her television appearances include those in "I Love Lucy," "The Dick Van Dyke Show," "Mister Ed," "Hazel," "The Beverly Hillbillies," and "My Three Sons." Audley passed in 1991, six days after her 86th birthday.
