Message History

Hello,

So this site is actually the main way that I keep in touch with my best friend who lives hundreds of miles away. We have many many messages, some very long, often with photo attachments showing cats or whatever. And today I clicked the 'show previous messages' and scrolled to the top to relax in nostalgia and found the earlier messages just gone. We are both still active members and I don't know why this happened. It's pretty distressing. I immediately backed up the messages that are still there but I'd really like some help finding a way to retrieve the lost ones. I know this isn't really a cuddling topic but difficult circumstances have made this the best place for us to be in touch, rather than email or something. And these are messages in lieu of cuddles, they feel as close to cuddles as we can currently have, and I miss him so much, I really don't want to lose any more of him.

Can anyone help with this?

I searched the forum for "message history" but only found a few entries from a couple of years ago related to changes in account status.

  • I noticed the same thing recently and o don’t think it was this way before because I recall being able to retrieve all my messages going back to the very first one sent. It seems there’s a cut off point now.
I would like to know when this started and what the cut off point is.

  • Noticed the same today. I wanted to refresh my memory on and old conversation before contact someone, but there is no record that we ever exchanged messages.

  • I noticed this the other day and it was confusing. I got a message from someone I met some months ago and when I went back to look at our previous conversation to refresh my memory, it was gone.

  • I do believe this has been that way for a couple of years now as back when I first joined (September 2016) after a several months I went to read over and refresh my memory with a couple members I talked with regularly and any message further back than roughly 6-8 months was missing with them. The strange part was other messages with different members (ones I didn't talk with as much) I had from further back were still readable. So it could be more based off a total message count limit that the system holds onto rather than the age of the messages.

    That's sad @Julia.

From a quick check it looks like about 80-85 messages are kept for each conversation.

@Mark Is this correct? (I assume old messages aren't archived?)

    @Julia

Those messages are still there but out of view. I'm sorry for causing you to worry about this.

I believe we temporarily limited the number of previous messages that load for server optimisation reasons until we have a better way of displaying them. I'll update you and this topic when I know more.

Might I suggest personal email or some widely-available social media platform for long-term correspondences where you would desire retention of message history for a longer term, or perhaps permanently?

  • TextFree is a good phone app for messages. There have to be dozens of others.

This should hopefully be resolved with the ability to view all previous messages.

Let me know if there are any issues with it.

  • @Mark Awesome! Thank you.

Now everyone gets to go and take a look at their old messages. :)

  • @Mark - Thank you!

In my case, there were two different men who resembled each other enough that I got confused between the two and I was trying to sort out which was which or even if it was the same person with a different profile. Thanks.

    Hello everyone :)

@Mark and @respectful , thank you so much, this means a lot to me. I've been able to go right back to Summer 2015 and back up our messages. So relieved! And it's great that it's helped others too :D

There is a wee issue though, the displayed messages jump from 21st September last year to 9th February a few days ago so there are some missing, the more recent ones. I automatically reloaded the page, logged out and back in but there's no difference. I haven't read through them all properly yet, just copy pasted to back up so not sure if there are any others missing. So glad to know they don't just vanish into the ether though haha :)

Update: I can now see messages from November last year, maybe we didn't message in October...? going to check with my friend.

Thanks again for helping so much, I know this isn't really what the platform is for.

Thanks for the info. We rushed this out and subsequently found a bug. An update has now been put out which hopefully makes this work completely as intended. If not, let me know!

  • It is nice to see the old messages again. I do see that you have to physically keep moving back, the view previous doesn't take you to the start of the thread but I've found that if I continue to click on view previous it gives me another batch of older messages.

Thanks so much for fixing that. There were some lovely messages I had done some grieving over losing them so it's nice to have those returned to me.

But I have actually saved all messages now in an off site location for that very reason. @Julia have you thought about just copy and pasting to a folder on your desktop or the cloud?
