Curing Loneliness With Volunteering

edited February 2019 in General

The other day I was dealing with my own form of loneliness. Missing my community and the like... and after my mini meltdown and a flood of online support, I decided to do things to help me uplift myself and others.

They say that by giving freely you feel gratitude. Gratitude often leads to feeling happier. I know this because I've experienced it many times.

Today was day 4 of providing Art in the Park free for the people interested in partaking. I've been trying to launch my art career and to share my knowledge and supplies with people who might enjoy it. I've done 2 acrylic painting classes, one drawing, and one jewelry making class.

A magical thing happened. I got to hear stories from people's lives who travel regularly. I got to teach kids and adults how to do something therapeutic. I'm meeting the community, bringing joy to people (like seriously, the kids were wondering if I was awake yet), and curing my loneliness.

I've recieved $15 in donations to go back into buying art supplies. I think the next thing I'll buy is some tempera paint to have fresher quality kid safe paint. What I had was donated and not in the best shape.

Do you have a skill that you could teach to people in your community? Have you? I'd love to hear your stories. How did teaching make you feel?

Oh wow this is a great idea! I think I will volunteer too - light bulb moment for me. Will be sharing stories here, great discussion topic

  • You are awesome! We need so much more of this!

  • I was delighted to read this, I am happy you have found away to make both yourself and others happy. I remember hearing on an NPR Program (The Writer's Almanac) the advice that Dr. Menninger (Of the Menninger Clinic fame) gave to people who felt unhappy. His advice was to go out and do something for someone else. The specific action or organization doesn't matter so much as the act of helping out other people.

I went to a pet shelter the other day and cuddled puppies. It definitely helps!

A few years ago I taught my students (it was a course of theatrical volunteering at TAMUCC).
Now, as I've retired, I have plenty of time for other activities. Like The Cuddle Bunch Experts, for instance (joined Arizona Humane Society last month). It's not free now, but I'm thinking about creating a similar non-profit project.

I don't know if I have any skills, but I have started volunteering recently. So far it's been a lot of meeting new people and exercising my atrophied social skills.

  • @bad_art_boi and doesn't it feel amazing using those decrept social skills?! I love my volunteer activites. It reminds me that I'm capable of having polite social interactions. That it's even fun to interact with people I don't know and who aren't just there to please me! I wash dishes and chop vegetables! Love it.
