Stuck at home? Ready, set, options

So you're quarantined or under shelter orders?

In lieu of cuddling, this thread is for things you can do if you're stuck at home for the next 1-2 weeks. (no political nor I'm-a-medical-expert posts, please)

This USA Today list has 100 things to do.

If you have kids, 70 ADDITIONAL things to do if you're stuck at home.

A friend of mine sent a link that the Paris Museums put 100,000 images online for unrestricted public use.

Care to share your ideas or link-love?

Be good to yourselves.

  • I have books to read, videos to watch, a garden to tend, a house to tidy, things to fix (which might require visits to a hardware store). I could easily go several weeks just catching up with the backlog of things I've not had time for in the past.

    Cool idea @Sideon!

Over four million books (as well as audio, movies etc.) can be either downloaded or borrowed for free at the Internet Archive, such as:

    -- Graphic novels.
-- Choose Your Own Adventure books.
-- A 13 part British radio drama of Lord of the Rings from 1981.

Explore the world of Interactive Fiction. You could even learn to create some.

Learn about board games and how to design them.

Go on a virtual tour of the world by picking random spots on Google Maps then switching to street view.

  • I haven't read all 100 things to do on the link you posted, so I apologize if there's any overlap! I feel there's so much to do. Things that would be on my list include watching videos/shows, playing video or board games, starting to learn a new language, working out from home, trying to increase my flexibility with yoga, writing, reading, organizing my house/computer/phone, DIY projects, learning about any topic in the world I wish to (thanks internet!), practicing certain skills from home, spring cleaning, working on art projects (cosplay and painting, for me!), getting in touch with people I haven't talked to for a while, going through all of those old travel photos I have lying around, listening to music and dancing for fun, meditating, maybe having some self-indulgent nights where I'll have a bubble bath and a facemask, think about what I'd like my next step or next adventure in life to be, get more involved in social media and maybe make some new friends, do all of those extra chores/tasks that I've been putting off for awhile, etc etc. I feel the options almost never end!

  • My life hasnt really been too impacted. I still work every day, still go to the store when I need something, and still visit friends. All three of my jobs are in healthcare, and I am not able to not be there in person but def do take great measures to ensure cleanliness/sanitation and minimize direct contact. If I do end up house bound, this would be an awesome link with great suggestions to explore. Thank you for the post @Sideon and @respectful

  • There are a few of us in my biz that are audiophiles and we started an End of Days competition on Google Chat. We are naming songs that have to do with the End of the World. For example, REM’s “It’s The End of the World As we Know It” came off first, followed by Prince’s “1999.” I was at number 19 and I said “Five Years” by David Bowie on my first go around, so you get the picture. This could go on for awhile.

I will be traveling around the world thanks to these things called books.

When the Man Comes Around by Johnny Cash
    Raining Blood by Slayer
    Pink Moon by Nick Drake
Party Like its the End of the World by Steel Panther

  • @Sideon Holy hell I have got to some more research, your doomsday playlist is expansive!

  • I'll be dialled in to work... Everything I do is across a network, so it doesn't much matter where I'm located.

  • I work with for my dad's self-employed landscape and lawn maintenance company (mostly lawn maintenance/care at residential places) and well I barely have the time or energy level and/or motivation to do a LOT of things I USED to do. So...since he's getting scared cause our job consists of dust, dirt, pollen and all kinds of bugs and nasty things and don't have sanitizers or soap and water available during work to clean and wash our hands... he's wanting us to stay at home for now. I think he should at LEAST tell his customers/clients about it...but I think he's just hoping most of them know and understand what's going on and that we need to try and protect ourselves as well. Many of them still pay us for the month even when we don't get to show up for a week...and some pay week by week. It's even tougher now that not everyone has a job due to this country wide shut down...so many of them might not even be able to afford our services. But dad has money stored in his bank and emergency cash at home. It's disheartening for us ALL to have to go through this crAzy spread. My sister who works at a call center...as soon as she started coughing, someone told the boss and had to let her go for the rest of the day.

BUT...there is a brighter side to ALL of this crAzy virus making us all need to stay home and ONLY go out for necessary things like food/groceries. Of course we as modern day humans are SO used to relying on things like social media and ads, and buying unnecessary items online and in store...that most of us have forgotten what it's like to be a kid like in the 90s (like myself), 80s, 70s and even 60s and so fourth. We didn't have the rising problems and issues as we have now with the costs of using the internet or WiFi or needing cable. Before all this modern-day lifestyle...our only bills we had was housing costs (water, heat, A/C, electric, garbage, sewer, rent (which included water, sewer and garbage in most places in at LEAST the 70s-early 00s), mortgage (plus all other home owning bills) and a landline with anywhere from 1-2 lines in the house. And IF we didn't answer our house phone(s)... people usually knew that meant we weren't home. And yes looking back...that was hard time for some of us to have to deal with especially in the case of an emergency or something important or calling for help or something. So yes...our phones now has SOME good things about them now than they did before when only certain people had car phones and so many had pagers at one time. But IF there is one thing I had to choose about missing the "old days"...would have to be our bonds we shared with family and close friends. Sure... MANY of us can have 100+ "friends/followers" on social media. But how many do we believe or think is our TRUE friends of the world? Of that 100+...how many of them can you call up and talk about your day, and/or problems WITHOUT putting on social media for everyone to see (not saying everyone does that now...most still do... including myself although I've cut down on what I share with people since I know not many of them care and/or say things). I remember when writing and sending letters to someone, making scrapbooks for ourselves and/or others...was fun for many of us. Nowadays...it's either emails, or FB messenger or Whatsapp or Skype...as well as MANY more places...that we "have to use" to get a hold of someone. Sure it's much quicker than airmail and emails sometimes too. But do we ALWAYS type things out of the bottom of our hearts and think about what we're typing to certain people? Not really...right? I could say so much more...but by now...I would hope y'all get the point after all that. Right? Lol! No... I'm NOT a writer... though I wish I could be writing letters and cards to the whole world SOMEday. Lol!

Now...as far as what I actually plan to do. Is get enough sleep and rest as well as doing things like working on cleaning and reorganizing my room, getting rid of stuff I don't use and/or need (became a bit of a hoarder/packrat over the years hoping and dreaming of using most of the things I've bought and gotten from people lol). So that ALONE will take me about a WEEK or so to do...since when I find things like photos and gadgets...I have a hard time figuring what I'm gonna do with them and start messing with them and other things. Lol! And IF I have time...and we stay another week inside... I'm sure I'll find some old board games to play and/or teach my nephew about. As well as read some of my books I've bought and collected over time, now that I have TIME to actually READ and possibly finish a few books WITHOUT distractions of the world... something I USED to do as a teen and pre-teen and even when I was in elementary school. Lol! Believe it or not...Reading chapter books actually kept me out of a LOT of trouble that some of my friends got into. Lol! I was a bit of a loner since I came from a ghetto area and ended up in a higher classy area like Citrus Heights while grandma was in Orangevale. Lol!

I USED to like going to her place. But then as I got older and she started asking how I was doing in school and all...I didn't really wanna see her... cause I know she didn't wanna hear about me failing many of my classes, except math of course! Lol! ALWAYS called me like her "soul child". 😊 But now she's in an assisted living place in Kansas near her other daughter. She's now in quarantine as she and the others there are over 60...and some in bad health. Won't let anyone but the workers in...and they have to go through a process to get into the place. But I think my aunt will try my sis advice and see IF she can visit her through the phone and see her through one of their windows...like someone else did somewhere else and got to see their loved one through the window. It's heartbreaking cause grandma's b'day is this Friday and this would be the FIRST year she's ever NOT been able to celebrate her actual day with ANY familia members... except by phone. 😢 I just hope and pray she stays okay. Someday hoping to come visit her BEFORE her time is up. No matter what... I'll ALWAYS have that BOND with her. 😥😢😊 When she goes...a piece of my heart will break off and leave an open space/hole...as she's ALWAYS carried a piece of my ❤️ with her. (Oh no...here goes the waterworks 😢🤧😫...hold it together woman.)

Which brings me to my last things to do... finding and playing my old CDs (yes I STILL have those lol) and FINALLY do some scrapbooking that I've been putting off for too long... making excuses or just not having enough energy as I used to. And NO...coffee or caffeine does NOTHING for me. Lol! Looks like I'll be binge watching Netflix...a service dad pays for and only my nephews use, catching up on my fave show The Fuller House as well as watching movies I've been wanting to watch for forever but NEVER do...due to work and tiredness. LMAO! That's my kind of Netflix and chill lifestyle. Lol!

Dang it! I was hoping to leave this to a few small condensed paragraphs...but I've ALWAYS had a hard time shortening things. Lol! Well...I hope and pray y'all will find things to do, get to eat and sleep well, and have/find FUN during ALL of this free times we're getting...as well as please do everything you guys (men and women) can to BE AND STAY healthy. Don't we here, all wanna go back to cuddling with each other til we can't cuddle no more? Lol! Stay SAFE and have FUN! Don't "WORK" TOO hard y'all. Lol! 😋😂😁 ~JG~

  • As it seems my earlier mentioned suggestion has been removed I'll try again.
As of right now my area has not been locked down or quarantined. My job is also not a work from home type of job and as of now there is indication of that changing. But in the event that does change a few ideas I have for myself at least are .....
Do a deep dive into all the NFL mock drafts and this year's draft class. As well as continuing to follow along with the Free Agency stuff seeing that's the only sports related stuff going right now.
Maybe rewatch all the Ifinity Saga movies in the recommended order and timeline.
And maybe finally get my concealed carry permit.

  • Unfortunately, this is a way of life for some in society. Their immune system causes them to live their everyday life in isolation. Find what works best for you. Welcome this time for self-evaluation and personnel growth

@Sideon what a FANTASTIC THREAD!!! What an amazing playlist as well.... I just heard a song called “If the World was Ending” JP Saxe. Makes you think a little.....

@PinkFancy coffee.... etc..... wine..... more wine.... DITTO!!! :3

So many fun things on this list!!! Some self care as well as projects that have been put off. You guys are rockstars!! I think the funnest project I am looking for to completing along with all the other fun pastimes is a penny counter I am creating. My son and I are going to do it together since he gets an extra week of spring break!! :) Maybe it will be fun to post some of our projects as they're completed etc.

I'm so thankful to be a part of this community!!! <3

  • @sillysassy - pics of your project when it's done, please!

Oh - another song to add to songlist: "As the World Falls Down" - David Bowie, from the movie Labyrinth

  • Also, I think I wIll reread Daniel Defoe’s “Journal of the Plague Year” as it seems very prescient.
