I was OFFENDED...

There I was, at a local café, waiting in line to place my order. The little building was brimming with young people, clad in the colors of the city's university; they eyed their phones and chatted amongst themselves in groups. They all wore masks.

I noticed them staring at me from time to time, and caught their disapproval. You see, I refuse to wear masks: I value freedom far too much, and do not desire to breathe life into liberal conspiracies. Their scorn was palpable, and it doesn't shame me to say that I clutched the heavy crucifix that I always wear around my neck. I found little comfort in Jesus, however; all of the hateful eyes upon me was harrowing to the extreme.

I heard voices. It came from the seating area to my left. "What a moron. I wonder why he's allowed in here without a mask? Someone should punch him." Laughter followed—cruel, malicious laughter. "I know, right? What an inconsiderate jerk," said another person in the group.

My blood boiled. I nearly broke the crucifix that I clutched. I inhaled deeply and let out a lengthy hiss, and then strode over to where the young people sat.

"EXCUSE ME," I roared. "I am incredibly offended by your ignorance and cruelty. I don't think you should stay here. Your evil makes you a far more troublesome guest than I."

The kids stared at me, dumbfounded by my righteous fury. I growled and grunted, stamped my feet and slapped at their table. It was then I noticed that one of the youths wore a Black Lives Matter mask. I gave a long screech that brought the entire café to a standstill. I'd reached a new summit of offense and outrage, and these hateful creatures would feel my wrath. "BLUE LIVES? BLUE LIVES! AAAAAAH!"

I felt a hand rest upon my shoulder. Some of the foam dripping from my mouth fell to the tiled floor as I growled again, and violently shook my head. "WHO DARES?"

A woman stood beside me. She was young, too, and well-kempt. From her expression and stance, I could discern that she was an enemy. "Excuse me, sir," she said. "I'm going to have to ask you to leave."

"Manager!" I bellowed, hurt beyond belief at how I was being persecuted.

"I am the manager," said the woman. "Leave immediately before I call the cops. This is the fifth time this week. And it's only Wednesday."

My heart ached. Tears spilled down my cheeks. I walked out of the store.

So, when was the last time you were offended, dear reader? Possibly, you were greatly offended by something that happened on this very forum?

    I have, alas, precisely the opposite problem. A man once called me a diarrhea talker and I thought it was prime insult, very nasty... and wasn't offended at all. I just can't seem to manage it. I foresee a future in which somebody shoves me into a wall, calls me a faggot, and throws my books in a puddle, and I fail entirely to press charges.

    A crippling lack of capacity for offense, I tell you. It's debilitating.

    The tone of your post upsets me. PERHAPS you're trying to make a joke. If that is the case: I don't understand. And even if I did, it probably wouldn't appeal to MY sense of humor—which is of incredible importance.

    I'm TELLING ON YOU.

    @UltimateChungus

    Oh dear. I really was entirely serious. Witness my tone remaining mildly hopeless, with a touch of self-mockery.

    ARGH.

    Somebody, anybody! Help me! The bad man on the internet is hurting me with his words!

  • [Deleted User]DarkLordChungus (deleted user)

    I just want to be in a setting where people can share their thoughts, but I also want to never be offended! Is this SO UNREASONABLE?

    Trolling and baiting and being sarcastic
    Gaslighting others and tossing lit matches
    Posting and needling with words that sting
    These are a few of your favorite things

    Being demeaning and cruel and sophomoric
    Laughing together while some just feel tragic
    Feeling untroubled by what it all brings
    These are a few of your favorite things

    heh... good times... let em roll eh?

    I feel that this post is an attack and I am deeply, terribly offended.

    This post is also offensive, as it makes light of autistic meltdowns. Please do some research into what that meme entails.

  • I, myself, am autistic. I find your offendedness to be offensive. The Cleveland Browns have one of the top ranked offensive lines in the NFL.

  • @UltimateChungus

    Huh... my bad. I thought you'd change "your" to "our" and go skipping about singing it with your little buddy...
    Whoops 🤷‍♀️

    Your offense at my being offended is trebly offensive.

    @quixotic_life

    ".. little buddy..." And now you're attacking a person for being vertically-challenged. Shame on you. I'm telling.

  • [Deleted User]DarrenWalker (deleted user)

    @quixotic_life: ...Little....

    Hmm.

    ...I don't do offense well, so I guess I'll let this guy handle it for me.

  • @DarrenWalker ~
    Aww... How cute are you?!

  • [Deleted User]DarrenWalker (deleted user)

    @quixotic_life: Pffft.

    Fyi ~ That term is highly offensive to some!

    Whether intended or not, calling someone a 'pussy' reaffirms society's time-old gender roles. And shows the user as out of touch &/or insensitive to the impact it has.

    Using the word 'pussy' as a derogatory term does multiple things- it creates a negative stigma around the word itself and indirectly associates women with weakness by relating the female vagina with cowardice and fragility.

    Really, it's time to stop using 'pussy' as a term of weakness and inferiority, and time to start using it as a term of greatness and empowerment. Women should be celebrated, vaginas and all! After all, pussies are pretty darn strong.

    I never called any one a p#### in my post
    Can we use he term Flake ?

  • edited January 2021

    @hawker69

    Ummm 🙄, you used a derogatory term for a female genitalia.

    Also, your name is hawker 69. You are not 69 years old. You have never been 69 years old. Maybe it is the number on your football jersey. And the term ‘hawker’ is someone who sells goods. It just seems like an odd choice for a platonic cuddle website.

    By the way, I am not offended. I’m feeling mostly ironic and quite a bit calm.

    Your offense at my being offended is trebly offensive.

    I'm offended that you find his offense at your offense offensive, but I'm not about to go on the offensive about it.

    The real question here is, can perpetual offense solve the energy crisis?

  • I am worried about Alabama's offense this coming Monday. :)

  • The best offense is a good defense

  • edited January 2021

    @Importance . As we all know I was referring to a cat. A female genitalia has many derogatory terms.
    As for your analysis of my user name. I am not offended you did even getting close. I am a WWII aircraft buff
    5 years ago I sat in a Hawker Hurricane with my picture taken . It was a No 69. PLEASE NO offense by
    correcting your analysis. I am NOT Offended you think my user name is an odd choice for a platonic cuddle website.
    I use the same user name at an amateur photo site. They are not offended by my odd user name.
    I am also an amateur nature photographer. I have some pictures of nice beavers.

  • @hawker69 ~
    I agree, you didn't call anyone that, but it was still used as a way of saying, 'It would be demeaning as a 'man' to be thought of as one who is 'weak, like a woman'.

    "My momma didn't raise no ____." - or whatever your wording was - is inappropriate here on CC and (IMO) should be the case everywhere.

    It's really up to you what term(s) you use though. I just wanted to alert you to it being problematic for some, and to provide you with an overview as to why that is.

    However, as an aside, if down the road I learned you were still using it the way you had earlier, I might conclude you aren't someone open to change/growth, aren't concerned with how what you say and do may impact others, and therefor I wouldn't have much, if any, respect for you or your opinion on things. 🤷‍♀️

    IDK ~ There have been many times where I've used words/phrases which are just part of general social discourse. That is until someone interrupts and says, "Whoa! Hold up." then explains the issue. It may take time, combined with a replacement word/phrase, but I intentionally make an effort to change.

    But again, it's up to you.

    And hopefully this...

    "As we all know I was referring to a cat."

    ... is just a failed attempt at 'humor' because it isn't true and (again, IMO) it isn't funny either. 😶

  • edited January 2021

    @hawker69 that is all very cool to know about your name.

    Do you happen to find double entendre funny? This is an honest and sincere question. I’m not trying to trap you. And by the way I’m still not offended.

    Cats
    Beavers
    And hawker 69ers.

    😏

  • This is one of the best lectures I’ve heard on this topic. I’m so happy I stumbled across it tonight. I wish that I would’ve stumbled across it in kindergarten and then listened to it every week for the rest of my life.

  • PS - @hawker69 ~

    I'm from Oregon and we have a "nice beaver" on our state flag!!

    And everywhere you go at Oregon State University you'll see many a "nice beaver"...

    Lol ~ Beavers. So dam funny! 😉

  • In high school we used to play sports against a school and their mascot was a beaver. I was one of those silly kids that would laugh add everything that could be turned into something inappropriate. I still might be guilty of that as an adult at times.
