@squeakytoy I've been wondering about that for a while. I think it's twofold. Firstly, the weight gives extra pressure and closeness. It's a bit like a super tight squeeze, but when you are squeezing somebody you can only keep it up for a minute or two.
Secondly, and this may related to the first thing, it's more intimate. Cuddle positions are most commonly side by side in some form. One person on top of another is more intimate. You don't allow somebody to trap you like that unless you really trust them. Similarly for the person on top, you are being held [up].
All of this conjures up old feelings of being held close as a baby.

A kindergarten teacher I know told me about a time one of her kids laid down on the ground, and a second kid put a beanbag chair on him and sat on it. The teacher was like, "Hey! Are you okay?" to the kid under the beanbag and he was perfectly content. So was the kid sitting on him. So she just let them do their thing. I immediately thought, "That sounds wonderful! I should get a beanbag chair!" LOL
I like big hugs and cuddles along with being either the big or little spoon.....
In the womb, curled up, sucking my thumb and listening to Mama's heartbeat. Next to that, nothing compares. But until next life, when I'll have a 9 month or so return to that arrangement, I'll take a good big spoon with an arm around my middle and a face buried in my neck any day of the week.
Listening to a heartbeat is always soothing. I like there to be as much skin to skin as is comfortable. Position wise I don't yet have a favorite. I've been lucky that every position tried in my first session was comforting. A lot of that has to do with my companion 😁
At the risk of sounding boring I like spooning (big spoon) and just like @littermate describes it but adding playing footsies while doing it as well.
@squeakytoy you're hardly alone in that sentiment, I've heard from many women how they like to feel the weight of another person on top of them
I love being the big spoon. I also love having someone's head on my chest. Occasionally I need the reverse of both I've mentioned.

@pmvines haven't you heard? Dad bod is apparently in right now. 😺 But seriously, you should try to not worry about positions making you seem old or out of shape. First off, you have a shape, otherwise you would be a ghost and I don't believe in ghosts so you wouldn't exist. That would be bad. Secondly, once you get past age 25 and your prefrontal cortex is fully developed, age doesn't matter. It's just a social construct. Third, if your cuddle buddy doesn't care, why should you? If they do care, that's their problem.
Your job, imo, is to give the best cuddles you can while making the other person feel safe and cared for, and to accept the cuddles that are given. This does require a modicum of communication and trust. Be honest and open and you're good.
Of course, this is coming from my extensive personal experience of one time...but it was a damn good cuddle!

Lol ~ @valkyrievixen ~ Me either! I made it up while posting. Pretzels are nice and all, but they just kind of laze about. Noodles are far more active and fun... and well... there's all kinds of sauce flavor potentials depending on who you noodle with too... IMO... 😉
Big spoons are tried and true for all cuddlers, but the one position that does it for me is the head to chest, which I call my "dessert" position because it leaves me feeling satisfied without feeling deprived.

I’m not sure if there’s a word for it, but my favorite is when I’m lying on my back, and my cuddle partner is lying on her side with her head on my chest, and her top leg draped over mine.
At this point, any position would be great compared to just talking about cuddling and how nifty keeno kewl it is.
