The first time you figured out what love languages were!

[Deleted User]MarieDone (deleted user)

I was at a summer camp that I had been to every summer, and they had us take a short quiz. We are all sitting around the fire as a group; it was a great place to be. The quiz showed me what my love language was and explained what that meant. We all went in a circle and talked about what we got, and it was so great. After that moment, I had words to describe something so true to me, so it will always be something I remember.

  • The first time I heard about love languages was when somebody left me Karma saying they thought mine must be touch.

I took three years of love language in high school. Can't speak a word of it anymore.

I only learned what that is about a year ago mine is quality time I thought it would be touch but then i learned how close it is i may not reach out to always touch someone because of my fear of rejection but I will always be there for the opportunity

    @verona
I bet it really is touch once the fear of rejection is conquered.

I learned about love languages back when I was trying to fix my marriage. My now-ex and I both took the quiz. I was an equally strong mix of quality time and physical affection, with a score of 0 for words of affirmation. His love language was squarely on words of affirmation (nothing significant in any other category).

Learning about the love languages didn't help my marriage, but I'm still glad to have read up on them. It helped me narrow down what I need in friendships and relationships, and also communicate better with people who have words of affirmation as their primary love language.

I'm still not really sure what my love language is. I think it changes day to day depending on which part of my personality is most prominent that day.

  • Does it work with Google Translate?

  • [Deleted User]squeakytoy (deleted user)

@TampaDad Honestly, probably about as well as any other language works with Google Translate :joy:

  • My friend gave me the book years ago (2012) to try the test. I take it every 3 years or so to see how I’m shifted as a person. It honestly hasn’t changed a lot. I find the whole idea of the 5 love languages fascinating and it ended up helping be understand relationships on a deeper level. I actually retook the test earlier today online so it’s ironic this discussion popped up for me lol

  • Wait, hold up... love has language? And there's multiple languages? No wonder I suck at connecting with people and reading them! Languages are extremely difficult, if not impossible, for me to learn due to how my brain works. Duh!

[WARNING, the above post has a wee bit of sarcasm in it. Use caution when replying.]

  • And then you realize that there are more than just what are outlined in the book. Next you realize that each love language has its own variety of love language subsets. For example; we all enjoy physical touch and cuddling, yet we all expect different things from the cuddling and we all give different things while cuddling. Bananas!

Yeah, I'll stick with KateLanguage. Be blunt, as honest as possible, accept the other person's truth. That last one is a doozy for me.

Not trying to be rude. I've just experienced things that work and those that don't work for me. 😺

I think my cat's love language is food.

  • Cat love language? Mine doesn't include personal space 😺

I greatly appreciate the concept of the 5 love languages. My own are quality time and physical touch. I do think they can change and shift with our experiences, ( I definitely could use less physical touch and quality time with my little boys and more verbal appreciation and acts of service like obedience from them😉)
I also feel, like others have said that there are more than 5. Teasing is most definitely an expression of love my dad uses. I think food is one that that runs parallel with acts of service, gifts, and quality time.
I do feel that it helps in relationships, but is definitely not a cure all. Relationships take all kinds of work, tools, and effort.

@ChefKate Awww, your cat's love language is human furniture! I wish my cat would just lie down on me and go to sleep, but most of the time he just likes to walk and climb all over me with his pointy little dooters.

  • I'll say roughly 1987. 😎

  • What are the love languages?

I'm aware the Greek language have different words with different subtle meanings that the English one word "love" has. These Greek love forms include unconditional or altruistic love (agape), familial or empathic love (storge), camaraderie love (philia), playful love (ludus), guest friendship or hospitality love (xenia), erotic or beauty love (eros), and self love (philautia).

Except for unconditional or altruistic love, which is the highest form of love, all other love types or kinds need to be ruled by a higher form of love for them to be healthy. For example, the strong camaraderie love of men belonging to a Mafia can be damaging if this love is not ruled by a higher form of love, such as empathic love and/or unconditional or altruistic love. As any person who knows anything from Italian Mafia history, their expectations among each other can be very conditional, which can turn violent when those conditions are not met.

@gentlesnuggle They're talking about the 5 love languages! It's a communication tool to help people find out which methods of showing love to their partners/friends/etc resonate best with them. You can find out what yours is/are here:

    https://www.5lovelanguages.com/quizzes/

  • It was a game changer for me. You gotta be willing to meet people on thier level though so if you're partners LL is words of affirmation you should be making a conscious effort to give them that if it is not your natural way of expressing.

  • I was in college! The church that I attended taught a series on the 5 love languages and it became real to me! I still use this model until this day, with my work families (so that they can better understand and meet each other’s needs).

  • A former paramour mentioned the book. I had not heard of it and I've never read the book but I liked the concept. It seems that it could clear up some misunderstanding. That was about six years ago. Mine are definitely touch and words, but food is right up there, too.
