Social distancing science

There's a new study from MIT on the effectiveness of social distancing in covid transmission indoors.

Just wondering people's thoughts on this as it relates to socialization and meeting in public. I think it's good news.

  • Why is it good news if the premise is that you are not safe regardless of how many feet you are apart? And if anything it reinforces that safest practice is to not only distance but also wear masks and to be vaccinated

  • Good news???? They are saying that distancing six feet or sixty feet won’t save you. This is bad news. 🤦🏻‍♂️

  • Masks and vaccinations AND social distancing help save lives.

  • I work in film.

I also have scarred lungs from asthma, a heart condition, and higher risk of blood clots and stroke (due to history). I know what's it's like to gasp for every breath, I have no intention of trying this body out, with COVID.

Some shows, they have this attitude, and you're "ok in an enclosed space with others, up to 15 min", or "6 feet or 60, makes no difference" and it does nothing but breed stupidity. The shows that play fast and loose with guidelines, picking and choosing, or putting qualifiers on it, are the ones that have high COVID positive rates.

"Oh, we can have x number of ppl in this soundstage, because square footage (we are actually metric, like the rest of the world, get with it, Americans) so it's ok if the whole crew is inside" results in 50+ ppl, elbow to elbow, at one end of a huge space, while every empty space is on camera. No. Just no.

There were days ALL the actors were sent home. Because positive test results. So, 2 week shutdown, worries of who else. I'll never work for Disney again. 1 week was too long.

Show I worked for 6 months? 1 sick. 1. In 6 months, spending 13+ hrs a day together, every day, all week, we adhered to the guidelines, and did not want to risk our homes, our family, to the possibility of permanent damage or death. Because we didn't play that game. No hanging out with your buddies for 14 min and 59 sec and scurrying away exactly then, because it's a moron lottery.

It was 6 months before COVID hit my city, that I got into a verbal fight with someone who was eating from a cold buffet table, with a fork, sticking it repeatedly into a communal serving dish, instead of serving himself, and eating from an individual bowl. Basic common sense and respect can't be enforced.

These are the ppl you're thinking "6 feet or 60, no difference", and I'm "quarter mile, or kill it with fire". Let's see which of us is still thriving in 5 years.

But here's the thing. We don't have data points or experience for this. It's never happened before. COVID is going to be the thesis for EVERY subject, for years, because we are just scratching the surface. You're suggesting changing the conditions in the middle of the experiment.

  • Covid is stupid

Wasn't able to read that article because they wanted me to remove my ad-blocker. But whenever I hear about a study, my two thoughts are how many people did they survey, and who paid for the study?

  • @UKGuy It was a peer reviewed study by MIT professors funded by MIT, Harvard Medical School, and the Massachusetts Consortium on Pathogen Readiness (MassCPR).

  • I got my second shot. I am immortal now
