What scares you?

What scares you? I mean real, nerve-jangling terror?

For me it's body horror, whether in real life or horror movies. I am particularly bothered by creatures or people with disproportionate facial features, for example grossly oversized (or undersized) eyes or mouths.

I can only assume this is due to The Uncanny Valley.

Bees, hornets, wasps, etc. Part of my job involves invading their domain from time to time. And I sweat bullets every time. I didn't used to be allergic, but every time I get stung, I become more so.

The only thing that scared me, only has access to me through divorce court, now.

By comparison, anything else is a ghost story for children around a campfire.

Anything that's real, and must be dealt with, is just another chore to be managed. You break it down into smaller jobs, and carefully make your way through it.

  • My two teen daughters.’

  • Scared of falling and of drowning . Both are feelings of a total lack of control over the outcome. Oh and of tight spaces I'm very claustrophobic. The thought of being confined to a very small space sends me into a panic. Wow I'm actually pretty anxious now that I think about it ....

    @MaullySterling I think I'll agree with you!
Speaking of children and fears, I can't help to add the pic about Halloween...! Oh, Dylan...

  • @Maverick07
    Oh, that Dylan.
    LOL

You needn't be scared of me, @Mmart. Once you get past the layers of loathing, rage, despondency, and anti-human sentiment, I'm a pretty nice dude.

Watch out for that @DarrenWalker guy, though. He gives me the heebie-jeebies.

Edit: Given that I've been summoned, I'll go ahead and contribute to this thread.

I dislike enclosed spaces, as they make me very uncomfortable. Deep water unnerves me, too. Forests instill a kind of terror in me, as they're an environ that I lack familiarity with; this unfamiliarity, coupled with my imagination, produces a nigh-endless amount of potential terrors—furtive eyes, shadowy shapes darting from behind one tree to another, the thought of sinewy limbs clinging to a branch and waiting to drop onto an unwitting passerby, etc. Logically, I'm aware that monsters don't lurk in the woods, but my mind puts them there all the same.

    Moths scare me, too.

  • [Deleted User]DarrenWalker (deleted user)

That's just because you know me, @DarkLordChungus.

So! What scares me for real? Hmmm.... I'd say I'm afraid of revealing my deepest and most easily weaponized weaknesses in public. Yeah.

They're totally normal fears, though. Completely human.

  • Farting near a burning candle while cuddling. It would end my little spoon days forever.

    @DarkLordChungus
fighting urge to post moth memes

Seriously, though. Your word pictures are wasted here. I'd like to see them translated to screen; tv, film

Bugs primarily but even more than just bugs. Things like bees, hornets, spiders, roaches, ladybugs, butterflies, snakes, etc. I only like fake ladybugs, bees, and butterflies...like I've earrings of them so like that is fine. But real no...

If I ranked some of the things I'm most afraid of:

    1. Some of my exes
    2. Catcallers
    3. Being homeless
    4. Getting seriously injured or killed (I'm unreasonably vigilant)
    5. Moths

That's two for moths. SO DON'T YOU DARE POST MOTH PICS @MaullySterling !

    1. Zipper accidents like the one in Something About Mary
    2. Race riots (it is why I avoid speedways, horse tracks, and greyhound tracks)
    3. Cereal killers (I love my breakfast)
    4. Door-to-door Jehovahs Witnesses disguised as Mormons
    5. Mormons disguised as Jehovah’s Witnesses
    6. Hidden cameras inside toilets
    7. Ring doorbells that are silent
    8. Getting high off next day air deliveries (the oxygen molecules have not fully committed)
    9. Friends named Brutus with political aspirations
    10. Full frontal nudity because it sounds like the other side is half-assed.
    11. Jell-O shots (not convinced they work against the flu or Covid)
    12. Social media because I find reporters annoying
    13. Fears because I am afraid of them
    14. Religion because who recycled the ligion?
    15. Big Macs because I am not a cannibal and I don’t know how his family feels about it.

@squeakytoy that's three for moths if you count @Amortentia 's generalised bug fear.

Am I the only one that is scared of body horror type stuff? I mean like Slenderman, Momo, Jeff The Killer etc.

  • @BuggleBear - I can't do horror shows. Nada. What I CAN do is read the movie wiki's plot and synopsis and know them that way, but I can't watch horror or I'm subjected to a week of nightmares and flashbacks, and sleeping with the light on.

    What scares me?

    • Ignorance, especially willful ignorance.
    • Agreeing with @FunCartel - zippers can be terrifying.
    • And agreeing with @pmvines re: falling and drowning, both being near-death experiences for me, plus, gravity hates me.

@Sideon Agreed on the horror movies! I can't do them, full stop. The last time I watched one was over 20 years ago. It gave me regular nightmares for almost two years, and my subconscious still holds onto pieces of it to spice up the occasional bad dream. Never again!

I'm not fond of dentists or needles. Looking over the edge of a high cliff that has no guard-rail. Rollercoasters. Wild animals with big claws or long sharp teeth.

The scariest thing I have experienced in my life was at around 11:30. It was close to the Fourth of July so it was a beautiful night! It was my bro, a great friend, and myself. We decided to just go for a stroll. We walked a couple miles up the road to a creepy as heck shed that could collapse at any time. Creepy things were happening that whole walk. But then something bizarre happened. Someone was driving towards us, and they put on their brights, crossed over to our lane and positioned their car to block us off! My brother and I froze! I was terrified! Thankfully my friend is a bigger guy, and he cranked his arm back as he walked right up to the driver side door. He was ready to knock the guy flat out!!! The guy drove off after that! I have never felt so threatened! It was the first time I really hated someone! It took me months to not get really angry when I would think about it! To this day I don’t know what that was about!

Other than that, crocodiles and alligators freak me out!!!!! I don’t even like seeing them in the zoo!!!
