Most of us have probably dabbled in some media where the characters are clearly having a bad day and the thought crosses our minds: "Damn, it sure would suck to be this person." Have you ever thought to yourself, "This character is making me feel the urge to reach into the screen with outreached arms and just go, 'there, there; it's okay'." After this thread sitting in my drafts for probably close to two years, I'm unleashing it out into the spooniverse.
For me, it's Stephen King's Carrie White.
Specifically more in the book than in the films. Being bullied all your life because you're overweight and because of your nutjob mother, being terrorised in the locker room with female sanitary supplies, learning you're even more of a freak because you can move stuff, being asked out to the prom by the hottest guy in school, knowing that even that's probably just a boost to his girlfriend's ego after treating you like dog doo, only to wind up covered in sow blood and humiliated in front of the whole school, and then killing everybody because it's all too much. Chamberlain would still be standing if somebody would have just placed Carrie in a good foster home and gave her a damned hug. (/s)
Someone recently mentioned Marv Heemeyer, of Tread fame, needing a hug. Though he was a real person, not sure if he counts. I personally think Marv needed a new city, a new hobby, and a psychiatrist more than he needed a hug, but that's just my opinion.
