Favorite Odd Jobs

    Probably the only "odd job" I've ever had is my favorite job. I have seasonal work as a haunter. Think Halloween type haunted houses, for those who don't know. I wish I could make it my regular job, but it's not regular work, as in it only goes during certain seasons. We did just finish our summer season though, which would be my 12th total season between 8 years in VA and working on my second year (two summer seasons, one fall/Halloween season, and one winter season, so far) here in TX.

    Last year, we gave people a bit of normal in an otherwise abnormal situation. I was a part of something that made peoples lives better, even if only for a few hours, and let them forget about what was going on out in the world as best as possible. We made 2020 suck less.

  • @TheNewNovelist and/or @PrinceDon Would either of you know what kind of training/background I’d need to be a “dummy” for self defense classes?

    @quixotic_life Love the irony of where you started to religious organizer.

    @BrianL I did monster makeup at Universal Orlando once. Loved hearing from the actors about their best scares! Also when I went through the houses myself and they made a point to let me see my work up close 😱

    The best part about this thread for me, is seeing how many others have found both bittersweet heartbreak, and beauty, in the death process. There’s very important people in my life that can’t even talk about it, so it’s nice to see others talk about it so openly.

  • Trip Sitter. I've never been paid to do this, but have done it for friends in trouble.... I was talking to a friend recently who had had a horrific mushroom trip where he became convinced that he had Covid and was spreading it to all of his family. He was with friends who were also on psychedelic drugs and nobody was able to help him calm down. We were talking about how nice it would be to have a trip sitter aka someone to just be there and give you water and feed you snacks, set up a nice shower for you and repeat to you that you are safe and makes sure you don't call the cops. People who want to explore psychedelics with their friends and don't want to ask each other to be the safe person. Personally I'm not a big drug user, but even so have had to have a friend stay with me all night and sing me songs after a pot brownie disaster. Managing people on drugs is really hard work and I think it could totally be a service.. or we should compensate people who give up their whole night to take care of us. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trip_sitter

  • @MxSmith I don't even drink, so I've always been a designated driver and voice of reason! Sometimes I'd egg people on, but I've never let anyone do anything dangerous. My pay usually came with free food, and once in a while a few bucks. Looking back, I definitely missed a few opportunities as a trip sitter 😆

    @MxSmith

    Not that I would legally have any first hand knowledge of that sort of thing, but…

    A friend of mine used to part of a group of friends who took turns being “Shaman”, and would arrive at the ritual with everything from candles to music to toys to movies to food and drink, all themed to guide the trip in specific directions.

    As the “Shaman” gained experience, consulted with one another, asked for suggestions or desired trips, that group of friends had QUITE a lot of fun, and more than a few deeply meaningful, incredibly influential journeys.

    They developed a series of Rules that became codified, and served new Shaman very well.

  • @CharlesThePoet wow!! That sounds so cool. @ZacRedBear thank you for being you. ❤
