Miles on people's profiles here?:

How are the miles calculated on people's profiles here? Is it based on one or both parties turning their location on?

I had people who are said to be <25 miles away and some 0 miles away message me. Though I don't know how either is being determined by the site.

    I think its when you initially make
    Your profile and add your zip code / location

    @cuddles_ndream I find it just asks for the city. Although two of the people who contacted me are both in Toronto. They are listed with different miles from me.

    Come to think of it, maybe it utilizes people's IP address up to a certain point. Then when the distance gets closer lists zero. 🤔

    Ok I see what you’re saying, when I went to edit profile it has my city & state , so maybe its just a guess /average or maybe it utilizes some type of location pointer like maps ect .. but I’m

    @Lovelight that's a head scratcher for sure, because you can only input a city in your profile as far as I can see, and I know I was never asked for location permission through the browser. That's a question for the site mods.

    You can get a rough idea with an IP, other than that it probably just guesses

    It works based on what people enter as their location. The distance should be considered as a rough guide because it's only accurate if both people enter their zip code. As we don't want to require that of members, you get mixed accuracy.

    If you gave your zipcode and the person next door entered the city, you won't realise how close you are. If both people enter their city, it's also limited because the reference geolocation will be whatever the API default is for that city (e.g. the centre).

    It would be nice if there was a rough indication of the accuracy of each distance, even if just by adding an asterisk if it is likely to be way off based on one or both locations being vague.
