Cuddler-in-law??

Alex cuddles with Bobby. Bobby cuddles with Chris.

Alex and Chris may be ignorant of each others' existence; have never met; or be acquaintances or friends. But they have never cuddled each other.

(If they cuddle in the future, obviously at that point they will become cuddle buddies.)

Suggestions please!

  • Metacuddlers, maybe?

    Eskimo cuddlers

  • The word that comes to mind is "strangers".

  • @mtp has it right, in polyamory metamour is the other of your other. Metacuddler would be accurate.

  • Definitely Eskimo cuddlers

I have lots of people in my life who relate to me but not each other. I don’t think I need a term to describe them. I know a lot of people. If I think of all the people that they know who don’t relate to me, there are literally thousands of them. I could group them by categories - people I dance with, people I cuddle with, people with whom I do steampunk, friends of friends, the other lovers of my lovers, the colleagues of my colleagues. Would I apply this to all of them?

    I’m with @Ibex on this.

I've needed a word for this several times and I'm bored of not having one. (English has so few words, it annoys me relentlessly.)

Notwithstanding that, the purpose of the excerise is to help develop the vocabulary of cuddling, since cuddling is new. Do we want a say in that?

I hadn't thought of metacuddler, I think it's my new front runner.

    Why Eskimo?

  • Sounds like the beginning of the exercise of five degrees of separation: the idea that we are connected to everyone in the world by five people or less.

“Eskimo cuddlers” was suggested because those who have slept with the same individual (on separate occasions) are colloquially known as Eskimo brothers/sisters.

I like the term metacuddler as well but I would not have guessed what it’s definition is when compared to Eskimo cuddler

    Thanks @Emma I didn't know that.

@Gary "__Emma_" gives us an interesting collision between Markdown and username tags! (see above)

  • I sort of like Eskimo cuddlers, but I doubt the First Nations would approve. Metacuddler may be correct, but sounds clinical. I like cuddle cousins even though it’s not exactly logical. Maybe mutual cuddle connections? Cuddle pool swimmates? Cuddle buddy of a cuddle buddy?

  • I would rather that a name sound clinical (because we are trying to make this a serious profession) than to be associated with slang for people who sleep together. Don't need more association with sex.

  • I agree that cuddling should be seen as a serious profession, @Mare_Bear , but I think @CuddleDuncan was talking more about enthusiasts who cuddled each other and each other’s cuddle buddies. Isn’t metacuddler, from metamour, not only clinical but also related to people who share sex/love partners?

  • Eskimo cuddler has a clear association with sex, once you know what it means. Metacuddler does not - meta is used as a prefix in lots of contexts (metadata, metastudy, metatheory). The sex connotation is left behind with the amour: it lingers in our heads because that was the particular example that was used to introduce it.

I wasn't thinking particularly either of enthusiasts or fellow-clients, or rather I was thinking of both.

  • Cuddle from another puddle.

  • Cuddlers once removed.

  • Channeling my inner Iago, I would call them cuddle cucks.

  • @FunCartel great minds...

Also, cuddlelinks (as in a chain)
