The history of the term Gypsy is interesting. It can be traced to the fact that people on Europe who met them, made the mistaken assumption that they were Egyptian. (There's more detail on the entry for Gypsy at etymonline dot com.)
This fact has been forgotten by many since it was first used in the 1600's. History has a lot of cases where people groups are given names different from the ones they call themselves.
