Dave Cahppelles new special on Netflix. Seems to be the fire this week.

Did he see a chance to use comedy to make trans jokes purposely addressing cancel/woke culture or is he homo/transphobic? And do you think comedians shouldn't joke about current culture when it comes to offending someone or do you think comedians should have full reign of whatever?

    As much as I used to enjoy his comedy, he’s always been very blatant in saying he doesn’t believe in transgender people. In the sketch, he said you’re either male or female. The end. I sort of understand what he was getting at in the sense that you’re assigned a gender at birth but he ruined it by saying he supports JK Rowling and saying “gender is a fact” and kept going by likening the only two existing genders to burgers… it was a weird analogy, but nonetheless he says he’s on “team TERF” which means “trans exclusionary radical feminist”. Aka : he excludes transgender people. Obviously, that’s wrong…

    I won’t spend time commenting back and forth with those that think transgender is a myth or that it’s stupid. If anyone thinks being transgender is against what they believe in or that it’s a dumb way of life or however your mind spins it, your opinion is obtuse, hurtful belligerent and uncaring to those that had to go through so much to finally feel comfortable in their own skins.

    To go back to Dave Chappelle, he’s even said he has “a problem with whites”.

    There’s a way to sell comedy where you’re innocently making a joke about race, gender, sexuality or anything along those lines without turning it into your soapbox where you’re preaching and saying “trans people are dumb” “white people are an issue”.

    Saying something like “I hate that drag queens can rock heels better than me. I’m jealous and I’m pissed” (without actually throwing hatred or anger. It’s a joke). But what Dave has been doing just seems to be more harmful than anything. 🤷🏼‍♀️

    When saying he’s team TERF and that he’s transphobic (constantly) he was saying it in a sarcastic way to mock those that called him transphobic.

    He said he respects the LGBT+ community and even spoke about his beautiful friendship with a trans woman and was respectful of her pronouns and her as an individual. He just likes to joke about anything and everything - it was the point of his show. He doesn’t care who it offends because it is his comedic style; but in his daily life, as he stated, he is respectful of others.

    When it comes to stand up, I think anyone should be able to talk about what they’d like. If unpopular or unsavory topics are addressed on the show then by all means stop watching it and give it a low rating. The comedian can take their low ratings/viewership and decide what to do about it for future shows

    If you watch the latest he says the only people he's ever hated were/are whites. Honestly, I can't blame him because, on the whole, we pretty much suck.

    …and just for reference sake, he lives in Yellow Springs Ohio. About a half hour from my office or so. It is one of the most accepting, liberal thinking communities in the world I think. If you weren't accepting of different lifestyles or people who may be different than your way of thinking, I don't think you would be comfortable living there. And his family lives there also. Very very accepting of any lifestyle. :)

    Thanks for sharing, but you did leave a segue into the question of what comedy has done for people in the past (just for laughs) compared to the curent climate of somedy in which comedians are scared of being cancelled. Obviously, Cahppelle can ever be cancelled and based on his netflix series, considering his art, do you think he deserves to be cancelled or can you argue his stance on the current culture can be respected to show what's up even if he puts his reputation on the line? I guess what I'm askin is; an entire art form (comedy), worth molding to conform to the current culture climate because a group of people got offended which comedy has done since its inception?

    @Saysoh Yes, when saying that I think anyone should talk about whatever they’d like at their comedy shows, I mean anything. Comedy is for laughs and everyone has their own style and opinion.

    If Dave were to be canceled for his show, I would disagree with the action due the aforementioned points I made earlier.

    It is all supply and demand. Take Michael Richards for example. He made some comments during that one show most of us already know about and while we have freedom of speech, he paid the price for his comments and lost great opportunities.

    Is it right or wrong to be canceled for comments you make at a show? It depends on everyone’s personal opinion. I draw the line at certain points but not everyone would agree with me.

    Comedians should be able to say what they want, it’s the last place left for free speech. And even then it’s less so. Dave has FU money and he can’t be cancelled he’s too big and funny!
    His last special when he was talking about people who were transracial, he made a stereotypical Asian overbite face I laughed because it wa a funny and at the same time called hmm a SOB. Comedy shows are meant to offend from time to time and uncomfortable topics are brought up. If you don’t want to be upset or uncomfortable don’t watch a rel comedy show. There’s plenty of clapter shows, where people clap just because and laugh even if not funny, like every late night talk show.
    Bill Burr, Chappelle, Colin Quinn, Seinfeld and a few other comedian are still funny, but most so-called comedians these days are not funny whatsoever because ether censor themselves. For example Amy Schumer used to be so funny, and then she decided to censor herself.
    The Amy Schumer show was hilarious, she wouldn’t do that show ever again.

    I’’ll leave it for others to discuss their approval or disapproval of Chappelle’s comments but from a scientific point of view, Dave Chappelle is wrong.

    Firs of all, while most humans fall into one of two chromosomal categories - XX or XY - a small percentage have an extra chromosome or other variations that result in something outside of typical male/female division. In addition, there are other conditions that produce variations, such as androgen insensitivity where a person is chromosomally male but has the body appearance of a female.

    In addition to that, there are variations in the brain. While human males and females are more alike than they are different, there are differences and some of them are reflected in the brain. In recent years brain studies have found that people who identify with the gender opposite to their physical sex turn out to have brains more similar to the gender with which they identify. So, one may have a “female” brain in a male body and vice versa.

    Robert Sapolsky is a well known neuroscientist whose area of expertise is the biology of human behavior. If you’d like to know more about the science of gender, here’s him speaking on the subject:

    Woke/cancel culture is toxic, abusive, and dangerous. We used to have a first amendment right to free speech in America. And it was there for a reason. Namely, to have open discourse on every topic and the freedom to have individual thoughts and to disagree without being punished for not complying to the groupthink stance on everything. Silencing anyone we disagree with is not only immature, it creates a dynamic of arrogant close-mindedness. Rather than approach others with curiosity and understanding on how they came to believe or feel what they do, we attack, vilify, silence, and retaliate against anyone who thinks and feels differently than we do. Since when are we always right? And if we’re all about “my truth, your truth” and tolerance then why are we so quick to silence and banish anyone who doesn’t share “our truth”? I’m sick of this hypocrisy in society and it needs to stop.

    Dave is the man. Special was great. Trans/homosexual people aren't a protected class of people, they can be made fun of as the rest. Looks at the Rotten Tomatoes score. 33% for the 'critics' 97% for audience. The same percentages were for the last special. And what a horrible thing to say @quixotic_life . What a self loathing, anti-white thing to say.

    The First Amendment relates to government control of speech. It has nothing at all to do with a private company or sponsor not supporting someone or audiences deciding they don't want to support them. If you are going to say X has the right to say Y, you have to also acknowledge that other people have the right to object and stop supporting X with their money or attention.

    How is what I said any different than what Dave said?

    The fact is, if/when I call the police I'm able to do so while having a reasonable expectation they'll actually help me. This isn't the case for the majority of non-whites. There's a great disparity between how we experience this land of 'freedoms', and if you don't understand that, then you completely missed Dave's point.

    I’m not white but most white people I know are great and yes some are bad. There are some great blacks, Asians, etc and also some that are not.
    Seems weird to think most of your own people suck, but hey everyone is allowed to think what they want. Cheers

    Then explain why cancel culture have more power than the right to free speech? In your words, who controls free speech then? Or, is free speech even a thing these days or is it a loose blah, blah, blah argument that really has no meaning because when you exercise it, is some instances you can lose your life's work?

    I can also say white privilege is prominent in schools. A white kid versus any other race when it comes to creating problems in the school: a white kid gets a slap on the wrist compared to any other race getting dealt something a lot harsher.

    The fact that it’s so easy to learn about white history in school but it’s harder to find class programs to learn about Asian culture, Latina culture. Even for me in Canada, I had American history alongside Canadian history and it was predominantly white history. We have aboriginal history here but not one program in almost any of our schools discuss that. 😓

    @Sheena123 ~ Yep! Totally the road I was looking down... We're in the very beginning stages here (change has intentionally begun in our school district's practices, the materials presented, focus is put on historically marginalized voices and their points of view are discussed, and we have equity teams in every building). But we still have a long, long, ways to go.
