We ended up with a fire because of microwave popcorn at my old office building. The building manager then banned making popcorn in the microwave.
At home I set it for 3 minutes and then listen for when it stops popping very much.
I don't do microwave popcorn. I make mine on the stovetop in a large pot. Yoder's popcorn with their own brand of popcorn oil and buttery salt. 1 cup kernels, 5 tbsp oil, 1 tsp salt. Heat oil, add salt and kernels, shake pot every 30 secs to make sure all kernels move to the bottom, and oil lubricates everything. Move to serving bowl and gently salt/shake to taste. This is usually my dinner once a week (shared with the wife).
