If You Had to Pick…

Would you rather…

Be able to speak ten different languages fluently

Or

Play ten different instruments expertly.

That's a tough one... I would go with speaking the language of music through 10 different instruments.

Both options have the potential for social/conversational bonuses, potential for making money as a translator or musician etc, but speaking 10 different languages fluently wins out based on practicality for me because it'd be a lot more useful when talking to people online/out in the real world (and playing instruments expertly wouldn't translate to being amazing as a composer, or lyricist, etc).

Even with the potential income from a job as a successful musician, being a translator would also likely be more consistent with work/money from it.

I'm not money obsessed or anything, and I value the entertainment I'd be able to create from playing instruments quite highly/being able to express myself that way quite highly, but in life the practicality of a skill is something worth considering and putting value in as well. I'd rather live comfortably as someone who can speak 10 languages fluently and then maybe learn instruments on the side, than be someone living chaotically with very little time or stability trying to learn languages on the side.

With 10 languages you'd be able to interact with most people on the planet as well I'd assume, whether any of them are their primary languages or secondary/tertiary.

  • What 10 languages? Music is universally understood so I’d pick that

Different different languages fluently without a single thought. This would be amazing!!! I’m now wondering if anyone can do this

  • I already sing and play drums. I don’t really have a want or need to learn other instruments so languages 100%!! I have so many friends and family that speak other languages so to be able to speak with them in their native tongue would be awesome!! Easier for travelling the world too!

  • Languages certainly. I'd love to be able to carry myself in any conversation and understand others. Plus I think everyone's most comfortable in their first language so being able to give someone else that comfort in a conversation would be great. 🙂

  • Gonna have to go with languages. Each one unlocks a whole new world of cultural experience and I wish I had the patience to learn even one. Foreign language music is especially rich, and I find Americans are often reluctant to listen to music if they can’t understand the lyrics which is a real shame.

  • Instruments. Don't plat any. Wish I would have followed my love of drums and keyboard.

@cuddles_ndream years ago I worked with an individual that could speak nine languages, four of them fluently, ASL, English, Spanish and French.

I was always awed by their ability to communicate and put everybody at ease.

If I had the choice between music and language , I would choose language. Even better if I could write it fluently, as I am much better putting my thoughts into written words then speaking at times.

  • @KYtranspant I was very intrigued about this topic so I decided to do a search & came across Ziad Fazah who claims to be fluent in 59 languages 😯 … his claims are disputed & other sources shows that he truly had been verified but 10 alone would be amazing by anyones standards … heck 3 in my books would be wow, imagine 5 … this is truly amazing I wish I knew one more fluently with the ability to write as you have mentioned.

  • Play ten different instruments expertly
    Easy-peasy

  • Words aren’t that great, imo. Music.

  • Languages.

Personally, I’d have to go with the music option. For music speaks to everyone

  • Languages are useless if you don't know anyone to speak them with, so I'd go with music - which anyone can appreciate.
