Wise sayings by family and friends

My grandmother "You can get used to anything except a tack in your shoe".

My aunt "If you can't be a help, at least don't be a hindrance." I have to add that before she started suffering from chronic depression she was so funny. One time Taco Bell barely put any chicken in her enchilada and she disgustedly said "Well, I can see where the chicken ran thru it."

A former boyfriend "You just never know about people". He had some bad relationship experiences like a lot of us and got drafted and served combat in Vietnam. He is one of the smartest people I know.

I hope this was food for thought or entertaining.

  • My uncle ~ "Everything in moderation... Including moderation."

    My mom ~ "Aaaand, we're off! Like a herd of turtles thundering into the night..." A favorite quote of hers. There's more to it, but she especially liked quoting that particular part.
    lol ~ I'm quoting her quoting of a quote. So meta.

  • I like both of those. I just remembered when my sisters and I had slumber parties my dad would say "Keep it down to a loud roar".

    Moderate moderation is always wise.

    Whenever I was searching for something I had mislaid, my mother would always say "It must be somewhere".

    My father would say of a weak person, "He couldn't punch his way out of a paper bag".

    These I learned from my pop, to add in the mix:

    “Leave things better than you found them”;

    “When taking a test or solving problems, start with the hardest”;

    “That individual is a couple fries short of a happy meal”;

    Concerning misplaced items, “…it’s usually the last place you looked”;

  • My dad:

    If your mother finds out, she'll have brass kittens.

    My mom:

    You make me so disgusted I could puke.

    My son:

    It's not often that I'm quoted.

    My ex:

    It's all about me.

    Yes, she literally said this on more than one occasion.

    My friends:

    You are valuable and we love you.

    Me:

    Gratitude is a habit-forming medication with no negative side effects.

    Thank you for that one, @JoyfulHeart

  • One of my grandpas: Never try to teach a pig to sing. It wastes your time and annoys the pig.

    My other grandpa: Some folks would complain if they were in a pie house with a fork in each hand.

  • Uncle: ‘I was more nervous than a long tailed cat in a room full of rocking chairs.’

    Same uncle: ‘He could talk a cat off the back of a fish truck.’

    My mother: If you fall from that tree and break a leg don't come running to me.

  • Whenever I fell off my bike, Dad would always look real concerned and say, "Oh no! Is the sidewalk okay? You didn't hurt it, did you?"

    He also likes to announce his departure with "well, I'm off like a dirty shirt" and often refers to himself as a pester rather than a pastor.

    Where the wisdom is in all that I'm not sure—but it is humorous.

    "No one is ever truly useless; they can always serve as a bad example."

    "If at first you don't succeed, try doing it the way I told you the first time."

    "If the first thing you got was the last thing you wanted, you probably shouldn't have asked in the first place."

  • Thanks for sharing everyone! I really enjoyed reading the funny and wise words!

  • My father: "knowledge doesn't take space"

    My mother: "you will understand one day"

    A coworker: "what doesn't kill you, makes you stronger - but if it kills you, you're dead"

  • One of my favorite sayings which inspired me during my childhood

    "Even the Lotus grows from the thickest mud and blooms into a beautiful flower"

  • My mom likes to say:
    "When you point your finger at someone, three fingers point back at you"

    I have others that she says but they are in Spanish 😀

  • I love this! Hope it keeps going.
    @JoyfulHeart Was that the ex that you referred to as a porcupine in another thread? LOL.
    @CC99 I love the one about the cat and the fish truck. I've never heard that.

    More please!

  • @achetocuddle Yes fortunately, because one ex is enough for me.

  • @Maverick07 LOL. For a nickel I could go off on a tangent about exes, but I won't. For one, I want to abide by the rules and stay on topic.

    On Two and a Half Men Charlie Harper said - Don't let your mouth write checks that your behind can't cash. This is slightly off-topic since I'm not related and don't know him.

    My Dad "Anytime someone wants to give you something, take it. If you don't want it, give it away or throw it away. But if you start saying no they are more likely to stop offering you things."

    Not from family or friends, but some of my favorite quotes I’ve collected over the years…

    “Get busy livin’ or get busy dyin’ “ - Andy Dufresne.

    “Don’t let the noise of others’ opinions drown out your own inner voice.” - Steve Jobs

    “Have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.” - Steve Jobs

    “In the end, it's not the years in your life that count. It's the life in your years.” - Abraham Lincoln

    “You miss 100% of the shots you don't take.” - Wayne Gretzky

    “Do or do not, there is no try.” - Yoda

    “Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind.” - Dr. Seuss

  • My aunt always said “when in doubt do without”. It was when something doesn’t seem right or your gut feeling says something is off.

  • [Deleted User]pianomann (deleted user)

    Grandfather: “Never eat at a restaurant called Mom’s. Never play cards with a guy named Doc. And never let ‘em see ya sweat.”

    Great-grandmother: “Un bicho malo nunca muere.” (A bad bug never dies.)

  • @butterflyqueen I have actually lived my life by your aunt's saying without fully realizing I was doing so. And not regretted it.

    @pianomann A bad bug never dies. That's says a mouthful. Like it.

    I appreciate all the contributions. I hope to enjoy more of the forum with you in the future. This website is fun and sure helped me get thru the last of winter.
