πŸ˜ŠπŸ˜πŸ˜ƒ Smiles..... Are they SIMILAR to a HUG??

edited June 2022 in General

I had such an interesting thought today as I was driving around town this sunny Wednesday.

First let me mention that I have a convertible YELLOW VW bug. In and of itself... it looks like a big yellow smiley emoji. πŸ™‚

Every time I go out in it, there are people that smile, wave, give me a thumbs up, hold up a peace sign, clap.... Any number of reactions that you wouldn't necessarily receive in most vehicles (my other transportation is a big dodge pickup... I have reference for this statement πŸ˜‚).

What happened in my brain is this..... When people exchange smiles, is it sort of like a hug from a distance? I'm sure there is science behind how many times people smile/laugh a day and the direct correlation to the joy in their life. Is it similar to oxytocin or dopamine like a hug? Am I remembering this from biology class? Am I nuts?

Maybe its just that after we all experienced faces with masks for so long (because of the pandemic which shall not be named) and NOW we finally get to see faces again, it is just so much more fun to smile? To engage in a silent hello from a distance?

Am I imagining that a silly old beetle could actually be creating a chain reaction of unanticipated happiness?

I really am looking for everyone's opinion on the smile/hug part. Whether you agree or disagree isn't the point.... I'm sure we can weigh in with ideas and personal experience and maybe we can leave the attacks and judgement at the door. Hmmmmm maybe I'll throw in a poll because that's always interesting too..... So many thoughts in my mind! Happy Wednesday! πŸ˜ŠπŸ™‚πŸ˜Ž and before you ask.... No I do NOT always drive around with flowers in my "Daisy" My friend was needing to prep her porch!

@sillysassy I checked going for a ride in your convertible.....wait a minute.....πŸ˜†....I've ridden with you in mine and haven't forgotten that !!!!

Awesome pic! πŸ‘ and smile is absolutely similar to a hug in my opinion! πŸ€—

  • Beautiful pic @sillysassy. Absolutely that smile is like a big hug!

A smile is like sunshine. It brightens your day.
And a smile is merely a hug from a distance.

  • Some years back, I was driving my little, two seat Miata convertible. As I drove past a local nursery that had a SALE sign. Being in the market for another Redbud tree, I pulled in. Just imagine the smiles, grins, and waves I got, driving home with an 8 ft. tall tree in the seat beside me.

  • @sillysassy sweet ride and looks like you take great care of it 😎

I'd say there's nothing like the "real thing" of actual physical contact, but smiles/eye contact definitely hit the same pleasure receptors in the brain, based of course on my own experience careful scientific data collection πŸ€“

  • I would say yes, a smile is like a big hug. I always say, β€œsmile, it’ll make ya feel good”, and it’s true, try it. 😊A nice, big, warm hug is the ultimate but a friendly smile can definitely lift my mood.

Have a great day & keep smiling! 😊

  • 2020 made me appreciate non touch forms of affection, and notice things I dont usually pay attention to. Like the way you can tell someone's expression or feelings through a mask . It's all in their eyes . The saying eyes are smiling is a real thing. Just didnt really pay attention before.

  • So @sillysassy has a yellow VW Bug convertible? Why am I not surprised!?

I used to have a flash convertible. The best thing about it was that children waved.

  • @pmvines ~ I was thinking the same thing.

I don't think I've felt hugged from a distance from someone's eyes alone, but there have been a number of times I've felt a sort of light fairy wand tap on the heart from them...

  • There was a couple threads about profile pics and that was my biggest comment about them...seeing profile pics with people smiling vs not-smiling makes a big difference.
Smiles are contagious and can make you feel warm and safe, similar to a hug.

Didn't realize how much I missed seeing peoples smiles until the masks started coming off

Although, minor exception when you are in a disciplinary review board in front of a bunch of Chiefs, then I found they really don't like you smiling

I do think that is a silver lining of our masked days... We were forced to find other ways to connect in a non-touch way and to not have the ACTUAL smile to look at. The eyes show the twinkles and the crinkles.

You guys are so sweet. Thank you for the kind words all. I like smiles... a LOT!! I feel like its a good form of self love as well.

  • Smiles, dammit!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! πŸ™‚πŸ™‚πŸ™‚πŸ™‚πŸ™‚πŸ™‚πŸ™‚πŸ™‚πŸ™‚πŸ™‚πŸ™‚πŸ™‚πŸ™‚πŸ™‚πŸ™‚πŸ™‚πŸ™‚πŸ™‚πŸ™‚πŸ™‚πŸ™‚πŸ™‚πŸ™‚πŸ™‚πŸ™‚πŸ™‚πŸ™‚πŸ™‚πŸ™‚πŸ™‚πŸ₯°
