Virtual hugs for everyone without a child

edited June 2022 in General

Inspired by @xandriarain, I'm sending virtual hugs to everyone who wishes they had children, and don't. Especially those who are past the age when such a thing is likely, or even possible.

I don't have children. (55 and single, since you ask.) This is not devasting and hasn't ruined my life or anything, but it is a sadness.

So for all you guys out there in the same boat, this evening after work I will raise a glass to us all. A wee dram may or may not be a better thing than a father's day card, but sure as hell tastes better. 🥃 🫂

And for those of you celebrating Father's Day today, please please do have a jolly time ... but take a moment to remember that, today at least, you are one of the 'haves'.

  • Thank you for this @CuddleDuncan.

  • @Chris04 Just a head's up, that day is a celebration for people who have chosen to be child-free, like myself; quite different from those who wished for children but couldn't have them.

  • @CuddleDuncan sending big, big hugs to you and all that wanted children, but couldn’t or didn’t have them. 💕

  • @CuddleDuncan what are your (and anyone else on here of course) thoughts about adoption? Or at least taking partial financial responsibility of an orphan?

@HUGGGGGG it's a good question. If the pattern of my life had been different I would definitely have considered adoption or fostering. I mean, as a matter of general principle I considered the question many years ago and found myself broadly in favour. But fifteen or twenty years ago I wouldn't have dreamt of attempting it as a single man - you're pretty much going to go straight on some kind of police list just for enquiring. Things are a little better now.

As it turned out, there was never an appropriate moment. At the critical point - not that my psychological health was good enough anyway - I was in a serious relationship with a partner who was doing that familiar transition from "babies are disgusting" to "I want one now". But then we split up and that was that. Now it's not merely a case of not fulfilling the criteria for acceptance, I wouldn't even get to the end of the form.

  • Thank you @CuddleDuncan … i have thought on and off sometimes that i could at least support one child only financially without fully adopting or caring

  • @HUGGGGGG I haven't really thought about that aspect. There's no real way to do it here, that I'm aware of. I mean for children in the UK, there are many charities that want you to support a child abroad. Academic for me at the moment anyway, I can barely support myself.
