@Mike_Girard Well, there's that , and also the popularity of brothels posing as karaoke bars, the creation of women only subway cars for non-grope zones, their extra emphasis on politeness and duty and rigid hiearchy as well as conformity, the intense salary worker culture (12+ work days), and the intense conversavatism of sexuality, and their odd themes in movies and anime. Japanese does have a rich cultural blend of the ancient and the modern, but they're also froth with neuroses.

Your assumption is that your culture , presumably American, is some kind of natural from which Japan radically, and toxically departs. Do you actually believe there is no prostitution flying under cover of something else in the US, or is it uniquely bad to hide it in karaoke bars? I think no grope subway cars are a good idea.
Yeah there's plenty of neurosis, but there's plenty of that everywhere, and I reckon we far exceed them on mental illness overall. We certainly top them for violent crime. Japan has about 800 -900 murders a year. My city alone had 500 last year, and it's on its way to topping that by 20% this year. A fifteen minute subway ride will carry me to a veritable urban village of people killing themselves with heroin.
The Japanese beat us on low infant mortality and life expectancy as well, and they aren't home to 20% of the world's prison population. The US keeps two million people in cages. Japan has around 50k.
What's your benchmark for deciding what cultures are doing things the right way? I mean that as a rhetorical question, btw.
Just to be clear, I don't object to generalizations about cultures on general principle. A lot of them are true. Japan is undoubtedly less individualist than the US, for instance. What I object to is the implicit centering of American culture as more natural and desirable, and shoehorning that view into this thread via one soda commercial.

The govt said to social distance and limit social gatherings and pple got sick - not even gonna touch the vax. I don't see what's wrong with putting different cultures under an anthropological and sociological lens. It kind of shows that human nature is the same across cultures ...just expressed in different ways. Observing and analyzing culture doesn't make one ethnocentric or narrow minded, but it is nice to be critical of cultures to celebrate what's healthy (food, art, entertainment, philosophy) and weed out the unhealthy elements (sexual assault, mass shootings, high suicide rates, etc.). I think putting cultures under a lens will do this - now, don't get me started on the Kpop industry/factories.
