Rising heat won't let me sleep

[Deleted User]Zundar (deleted user)

Currently 4am here and attempting to get to sleep but failing miserably, dead tired both physically and mentally but the weather has other plans. I know it's going to all be eaten within 24 hours of purchase but current plan is to stay awake for another 3 hours, get some icecream, and hope I'm either cool enough or tired enough to manage to get some snoozing in.

Anyone else having trouble sleeping? whether for weather related reasons or others.

I used to have a lot of trouble sleeping due to overheating at night. How I just keep a fan on my bedside table pointed directly at me every night. Mostly what keeps me awake these days are reoccurring nightmares.

  • 8:36pm here. It's 88F outside. I might be huddled under the AC vent.

I feel your pain, @Zundar . Try some cooled chamomile tea with honey. Wet washcloth across your forehead.

  • The hottest day of the year is July 22nd… almost there and it will start getting cooler

  • My friend swears by sleeping in wet socks to cool down.

  • I've been there too, it's not fun. I love everyone's suggestions! I would go for a slow walk outside, take as cold a shower as I could stand, do the fan on me thing and sip ice water. Straws help.

Some great advice from the looks of things.

Can combine them all by drinking cooled chamomile tea with honey mixed with icewater through a straw with a wet washcloth on my forehead, while sleepwalking outside, and wearing wet socks, with a fan pointed at my face, but that might be trying too many things at once.

    Cold showers. ✊

  • Ice cubes on the back of the neck.

  • This one's going to sound off-the-wall, but when heat used to keep me awake, I would play an 8 hour loop of blizzard sounds I found on YouTube. Between the power of suggestion and the pleasant white-ish noise, it helped quite a bit.

  • 4 of my dogs like to sleep in my bed so I've honestly just taken to sleeping in my chair. It's a humid summer in South Carolina, I can't be dealing with all that extra heat lol

@Mike_Girard Not so off'the-wall. I do the same only it is waves crashing up against the rocky shore.

  • @Zundar a long, long time ago when I shared a college dorm room in Salt Lake City, Utah in US, it got pretty hot late in the Spring. My roomie had the bunk below, which he had retrofitted into a water bed, the lining of which was directly on the concrete floor. I tried out that water bed, with the heater off, and it took a while but it sucked all the heat out of me. I woke up in the dark early morning hours shivering. So I'm just telling you that there are some possibilities there for cooling you off in London this summer. One caveat is probably that the humidity of where you are is significantly higher than any place in Utah. Still, the principle of using a heavy mass with a high specific heat, like water, could be useful for you in cooling off. Good luck!

  • I’ve heard brown noise works at helping to get sleep.

  • @Tranquilescape Not the South Park "Brown Note", I hope!?

  • @UCpaaHVg6u0 i don’t know what that is.🤷🏼‍♀️

105 degrees fahrenheit here in Texas. Cold showers and ice water makes the difference.

  • I have found using an air conditioner works really well. It's always 68 F in my bedroom.

  • Expecting 111 tomorrow in Vegas, I am taking benadryl to help me sleep and have the ceiling fan, and a large fan blowing on me, and of coarse the AC... cold showers help too.

  • @Tranquilescape Forgive me! My sense of humor likes to crawl around in low places. In the South Park show, the Brown Note is an auditory frequency pitch which, if heard by a human will immediately cause one to completely evacuate ones bowels.

This thread shows to go you that any topic possible will get responses.

  • I live in NM and it is regularly unbearable here. I went out and bought a $60 window AC unit from Wally World and it has been a life-safer. It just works for my one room but I can finally sleep.

  • It’s been hot as hell in St. Louis. Some days it hits 100°F or at least the high 90s. Today the humidity was high, too, so that at 11 p.m. tonight it was 87°F, which is hot enough, but the humidity was 68% so that the heat index was 97°F. Thank science and engineering for air conditioning. I suppose that in England, though, it’s not usually needed so folks don’t have it.

  • Almost nobody has air conditioning in the UK, not even properly rich people.

  • CuddleDuncan, I know. Many in Michigan don't either, but an in-room A/C unit might be a worthy investment if it helps you sleep. Sleep is essential for good health and productivity, not to mention general quality of life. I just happened to see a couple of NYT articles which reminded me of this thread.

  • This morning I bought some supermarket sushi (yes, I know) and in the exitement of the day it just got left in the kitchen. This evening I found it .... the salmon had cooked.

Tasted all right. Waste not, want not.
