What to do in New York?

I'm flying into La Guardia and staying near Hofstra University from Friday till Monday night.

Most of my time is going to be busy with wedding festivities but I'll have Monday to myself, after everyone flies out.

So, if you had a free Monday in NY what would you do? I'd like some local input.

    Oh my gosh, there's a place called Schmackary's that simply must be tried! Go early, the lines go down the block. Best freaking cookies ever.

    I know @cuddles_ndream will disagree with me, but I think you've got to try that cheap pizza on the street corners, those huge slices...if I weren't vegan, I would be chowing down on that stuff every day!

    Times Square at night is a lovely sight to see.

    If you have time/money for a Broadway show, do itttttttt.

    You should look into Central Park, botanical gardens, Bronx zoo or central park zoo, maybe check out times Square to see if they have any random events or activities, free concerts at Bryant Park, etc.

    My very favorite place in New York is The Cloisters. It’s at the upper tip of Manhattan, either the last or second to last stop on the A Train. I think the park is called Tyson Park. Don’t take my word for all this, make sure to check. It’s a museum of Medieval Art and home to the famous Unicorn Tapestries. One of my favorite spots is a courtyard overlooking the Hudson River. Across the river, the Palisades of New Jersey are wooded and there’s a monastery rising up out of the trees. Up the river is (I think) the George Washington Bridge. It’s a beautiful, serene scene and it’s hard to believe one is in Manhattan. I think admission is a voluntary contribution.

    Definitely have some pizza while in New York! And a bagel. They have the best.

    Start your morning in Central Park (Enter on the NE entrance, which is 5th Avenue and 5th Avenue) wander around inside (on the west side around 72nd street you should be able to find Strawberry Fields and find a someone with a guitar singing Beatles songs for spare change) a quick jaunt through the metropolitan Museum of art (Entrance is 5th Avenue and 82nd St) I recommend the Chinese Garden, Suits of Armor and European Paintings.
    Then walk outside and down 5th Avenue until you hit 42nd street (you’ll notice the NYC Research Library, front entrance has the famous lions) then walk over two avenues to Times Square which is 42nd St and Broadway.
    Then walk down Broadway and you’ll see Macys on your right at 34th St.
    Then continue on Broadway until 23rd St and you’ll see the Flatiron Building, then continue until you hit Union Square which is 14th St. on 11th St you will find the Strand Bookstore. And if you have energy left walk down Broadway until you hit canal St. swing a left and walk up Canal St until you hit Elizabeth St and swing a left and you’ll fjnd XO Taste on 41 Elizabethst. Plop yourself down and get the Baked Pork Chop with Rice and the Shanghai Soul dumplings and if very hungry the Sesame Chicken.

    @Babichev The Cloisters is a wonderful place! They have many reliquaries, which were made to contain relics, the body parts of saints and such.

    It doesn't matter. NY has a million things you could so, but nothing you should do.

    If I had a free Monday in New York I'd get mildly drunk with my sister and her husband in the bar opposite their flat. But I'm not sure that really helps you.

    I hope you picked a fun hotel. That's one of my favorite things about NYC, such interesting hotels! And the food... I always make a point of going to the Curry Hill neighborhood for Indian food. Everything tastes AMAZING. Finally, I love good architecture and it's hard to go wrong just walking around, but i really enjoy the High Line park. A park built on an old elevated train track that goes through the city.

    The Metropolitan Museum of Art is a good spot to look at arts if thats interests you

    Outdoor movies. Shakespeare in the park. Concerts or music events. Take a guided tour of a neighborhood in the city you'd like to explore. People watching or sightseeing. I hope you enjoy the city.

    You should go to the beach! If you want time away from the city.

    OR hit up the Met or Museum of Natural History. Have dollar pizza. Check out the One World Observatory. Avoid Time Square

    Back in the day I would head straight to St Marks between 2nd and Cooper Union. There was a record store called Sounds, and across from that was an NA club, the How Club. Around the corner I would get an inexpensive but delicious meal at B&H Dairy, which is still there. If you go there now, you'll probably be able to treat a less fortunate soul to a healthy meal. Off of 7th St was the Ukrainian area, which was Taras Shevshenko Place. By there was McSorley's Ale House, which specialized in intoxicating people to the point of emesis, as evidence by the ample coating of sawdust on the floor. Classy. It was a short hop to the Bowery, for more opportunities to aid the suffering masses who would wipe your windshield with spit for the mere cost of a dollar or any loose change.

    Thanks for the all the inputs.

    I think I'll be hitting up the cloisters. It wouldn't have been on my radar unless I had reached out here. The monastery sound lovely and I look forward to seeing it

    If any locals want to meet up, I'll buy lunch, and I can tell you about Space Stations (I design them for a living), solo backpacking trips through the peruvian amazon and my adventures with indigenous medicine.

    I used to meet locals through couchsurfing, when I backpacked, but covid put a damper on that.

    I loved going to Ellis Island. I seem to remember a big statue there.

    @Lovelight It worked great for me when I visited Colorado, a few weeks ago. Drummed up tons of profile views and spontaneous PM's from the locals. Even met one of them who is awesome sauce on a stick!

    I had a lovely time in New York.

    Thanks to advice from @Ironman294 I hit up the Met, specifically for the medieval armor and Japanese garden.

    The armor was my favorite part of the museum. I even got to see some swords that were used by my ancestors.

    The inscription on this sword says "there is no warrior like Ali, and no sword like the Zulfiqar".

    Ali was kind of Iike a Muslim Marcus Aurelius. A warrior, and a wise philosopher and ruler.

    Also, thanks to the tip from @Babichev I went to the the Cloisters. I got some time to reflect in this beautiful monastery and got some amazing views of the Hudson.

    What made all of this really convenient is that @Miabear, who has an apartment in Manhattan allowed me to drop off my luggage at her place in the morning and pick up in the evening before I headed to the airport. I am super grateful for her kindness, and she is an example of how great the CC community is.

    Finally, I will share a few pictures from the festivities for those who are interested.

    Ther wedding had five events. We usually dress differently for each event. Here, I'm sharing what I wore at three.
