Do you like amateur or professional massages better?

I've had both, and I'll say I enjoy amateur massages a bit better. They're not as skilled but something about having someone that you know fumbling and mushing your body up that is comforting.

I took two non-credit courses in college and enjoyed exchanging massages with other amateurs as well.

  • I think the difference is in wording. A real massage is supposed to be by a licensed massage therapist.
But i have found that I prefer what I call a back rub or even light back scratching.
That is so much nicer than the professional massage for me. I can fall asleep to a backrub while a massage usually leaves me in lots of pain as they work on those knots

  • @Melancholy Back scratches are nice! I also like knowing the person; maybe the personal relationship enhances the feeling or the care involved.

  • I experienced wonderful massages from professionals and amateurs. An individual’s personal skills/positive energy made the massage enjoyable. Usually professionals use a set of pre planed skills, while non trained amateurs usually do what they think feels good.

  • Is it considered a non-professional massage if they climb on your back?

  • Geez, I think it varies. My back is a wreck and I really need someone who knows what they're doing to adjust me some - professional. Most of the time I just want the touch, and a softer more personal connection, then I think amateurs are often better because they strive possibly less to be clinical and do what they know they enjoy. I definitely can see the answer here going either way for me.

  • @dave31415 I had 2 LMTs (female and male), walk on my back/body before during professional massage. I have not experienced “climb on your back” so unsure what type of person would do it or not.

I have never trusted an amateur masseuse. They have always rubbed me the wrong way.

  • @Btown Nice continued humor!!!😂🤣

  • @Btown - Christina, is that you???

  • @cylee1180 I love ❤️ it! One of my favorite artists and songs 🎶!!!

  • @SuperManCuddles - Classic. Tho I was always the 98 degrees fan and maybe Robyn. Lol

  • @cylee1180 Nice 💯I liked 98 degrees too and other pop stars ⭐️ /groups 🎶!!!

  • Professionals, always.

First no amateur can last 90 minutes. Next the training matters.

@TigerFan - Touche. I took two non cred massage courses in college. I can probably do 2 or 3 hours if needed. It must be one of my special moves. My teacher said one main thing is to use your body weight instead of hand or arm strength - the rest can be attested to my martial arts training.

  • Professionals for me. I've never had an amateur give me a massage that was good and lasted more than a few minutes.

  • @TigerFan I have no training at all but have exchanged with many LMTs over the years. Many don’t know that I am not an LMT until I tell them and have provided relaxation for 2 to 3 hours before! Many people gave feedback and really enjoyed it too! Just like cuddling, I have no training but a high number of people in the karmas really enjoyed the sessions!🤗

I’ve been a professional massage therapist for over 30 years. I’ve had hundreds of massages by dozens of people. (If you count the practice sessions in classes then probably a couple hundred people.) No amateur has come close to even an average professional massage although some amateurs have been better than some bad massage therapists. Often guys who are not MTs will brag to me about how good they are at giving massage but my experience has been that they were not. I’ve gotten pretty particular about who I’ll let put their hands on me, even when it comes to licensed MTs.

It doesn’t matter what I like, what matters is what works for you and what is available to you. Until recently, I taught a massage class for non-professionals three times a year for fifteen years through the community college. There’s lots people can do for each other at home. I’ve taught family members how to do specific treatments for another family member so they could have consistent treatment at home. I’m all for home grown massage. The world would probably be a kinder, gentler place if more people got massage.

There are some cultures - like India, Nepal, Sri Lanka - where mothers massage their babies and children every day until they reach a certain age.

As long as it’s done in a way that feels good to the person receiving it and is not causing harm I’m all for it.
