Why a daily limit on sent messages?

I joined this site 2 days ago. After successfully sending 9 messages to other members, when I tried to send the 10th message, I got an error:

Please wait 24 hours before contacting any more people. You can still talk within existing conversations. New accounts have their recipient limit increase over several weeks.

The next day I was able to send 11 messages and got the above error on the 12th.

It has now been more than 48 hours since I first joined, but I am still getting the same error. How does the system decide when to give a new day's allotment of messages?

It would be nice if, when viewing my mailbox, it told me how many more messages I can send and when I will get my next allotment of messages.

    I don’t know when or how the limits are set or lifted. It is a bother. I think the limit is on initiations with person whom you have not contacted previously. I believe one someone replies you can go back and forth as with any other messaging.

    But I think the idea is to slow a person down. Take in the sights, visit the forum, wait by the phone agonizingly hoping someone will reply and release you from cuddle-purgatory.

    It's annoying but at the same time I do agree with having a limit. If I had to guess possible reasons for having a limit in place:

    • It helps the website run better; anyone who does coding/programming will know that too much user activity in too short a space of time can sometimes cause a website to run drastically slower or even go down completely for a short space of time. It's unlikely that many people would send that many new messages in one day but with what some people are like today, you never know.
    • It prevents spam if anyone like that were to join the site. It wouldn't prevent spammers from spamming some of the forum threads but at least private messaging-wise there wouldn't be much damage before they get banned.
    • It's there to encourage people to pace themselves. At the end of the day, if people could and were able to go full out on here from day 1 they could probably spend ridiculous amounts of their time on here and/or meeting people off the site instead of getting on with other, already existing and likely more important, parts of their lives.

    That's if I had to guess though. In any case, personally, I probably only exchange messages with one or two people in a day most days, including those I had already previously messaged; if you're hitting your daily limit loads then you probably should pace yourself more, concentrate more on a few people instead of wildly messaging loads of people. I do agree though that the site should probably tell you how many more new contacts you can message that day.

    @Let_Me_Hold_You New users have the tightest limits but over the days and weeks they are lifted to a degree that most people would no longer notice them.

    Primary reason for the recipient limit is to mitigate damage by new users who join to spam/scam. We don't really have limits on messages in general such as existing conversations.

    @Pennyhugs I was new a few months back and never ran into the message limit. I think the initial limit is 9 a Day. But I believe that even if you hit the limit, you can reply to additional messages that you receive from others without regard to the limit.

    I had the issue in the beginning but recently no limit barriers. I will say be patient and keep a positive approach:)

    Discourages spam/copy and paste messages. Makes sense to me.

    Four is the most I've sent in one day so I guess I'm a lightweight. :3

    Interesting. I didn't knew as I barely ever initiate lol, though once one starts talking I know it's fine. My other take if not already mentioned would be helps to lower spam I guess.

    I just sent off my third batch of messages, 27 in total so far and 0 replies, though I did get "original" messages from 2 other people (i.e. people I had not sent a message to), one a man, one a woman.

    Unfortunately, a lot of the profiles for women in my area say they have not been on the site for 3 or 4 or 5 years! So I don't really expect a reply from those people.

    Yes that's an issue some of us run into among some others. How to combat such is still rather a mystery as far as I know. Why some don't return for so long is also one of its own. Though if it's like a few weeks to like a few months there's still a chance they could get emails with the message and reply back........
