Do me a favor, please

Please check on your young person. Whether it be tour child, grandchild, niece, nephew or neighbor. These youngsters are dealing with things in ways we couldn’t imagine. They aren’t equipt to understand what’s to come and we aren’t equipt to protect them from this world. But we can check in with them embrace them and help them.

It kind of hit me today, that these young kids aren’t handling life like we are and to be honest most of us ain’t handling it well either.

I'm a parent to a 21 yr old believe me , above comment is truth . So different for him, I dont know that I would be the same person I am today if his generation were what I had to grow up in . I will say though that being on autism spectrum there are more resources and opportunities, and being lgbtq he def has it much easier than my dont ask dont tell generation did . Everything else though is just nuts to me .

  • @BashfulLoner Best PSA I have seen on here. Yes they have so much to deal with in a world gone bonkers—they had two years of their childhood upended, eco-anxiety is real, wage stagnation, student loan debt, social media bullying, unaffordable housing, and so on and so on. I fear for the generations after me because political and social upheaval will be the norm and will be a constant aggravating factor to mental health in the coming years.

  • Absolutely right. I work with children and most of them don't get listened to by adults. They don't get enough/any real conversation with adults, and they crave it.

  • I’ve been hearing an uptick in stories that these young people are not ok. From runaways, suicide attempts, just disappearing for a few months, heavy escapism and other behaviors that lead to many other issues. Ranging in ages 10 - 25.

I recently heard a story about a 14 year old attempting suicide. And how he ( the father) is trying to adjust an forgive himself. I related because my sun is 14 and i fear he’s not happy.

I struggle with helping him be happy, but be a guide with his choices. I’ve resigned to prioritize his happiness right now, we will figure the rest out later.

  • This is so true. I have a daughter that is dealing with an fairly severe eating disorder that manifested in only two months.
The amount of weight they carry on their shoulders is immense. Unfortunately, in this age of immediate information it seems there is a lack of coping skills.

  • Very true...we all a product of our environment and nothing happens in a vacuum..They have built coping mechanisms that can be good or bad...I can only speak for my own experience with my children and their mental health issues and struggles..(My own child tried taking her life) That made me look around and actually see others people's struggles. I had to teach myself to unlearn and I am still doing that.. However, I think that my children 's mental health issues have forced me to acknowledge my own hypocrisy as a human being....😏 I feel like I failed as a parent..🥴 on a micro level but on a macro level the world has messed up... Just my thoughts.....

  • @pmvines our kids are very alike! I don’t think we have talked much about it but your words continue to be comforting.

They don’t seem to have the independence that we had, I can’t help compare myself at his age to his experiences. But reaching out and mentoring is a great idea.

  • My 21 year old son attempted suicide this summer. I agree with the sentiments shared by the original poster. However comma a lot of the issues this generation faces is very much self inflicted; direct results of their own personal choices. The level of respect for elders, parents and those in authority barely even exists with them. So many don’t have respect for themselves, much less anybody else! They don’t like to listen to understand. Instead they choose to listen to respond with clap-backs and sarcasm all the time. They’re not interested in gleaning from the elders or learning from the wisdom & mistakes of those before them. So, this makes it all extremely difficult for us as parents to give them the necessary guidance because more often than not they’re unwilling to receive it as they speak to you out of turn and with such blatant disrespect telling you all while telling you about their rights!! It comes to a point where you just have to wish them the best while they figure it out on their own the best way they can. Say a prayer for them and hopefully life won’t be too brutal in showing them what you tried to teach them in their unwillingness to learn.

  • 💕💕💕 I agree with this post.

  • I see it a lot. Its like this facade going on where children are being characters and not who they truly are, following and being influenced by everything but self- love and self- growth. I usually take away all technology so we can all reflect on our thoughts and feelings, and see if it make us feel more uplifted and sane. Sometimes they just need a time out and a nap from thinking about things that have nothing to do with them. Most the time they are mimicking emotions rather than critically thinking about what they are saying, but mines are very young. Keep them safe 🙏🏽
