Eating insects

Anybody who thinks that insects would make unappetising food has clearly never met a durian fruit.

That is by far the most revolting thing I've ever eaten, or been invited to eat. And I'm including the ripe French cheese that made me gag so furiously in a posh restaurant that the waiter grabbed a bowl. (Yes, I had said airily, "I'll try the strongest one". To rub salt in the wound my then-partner looked me straight in the eye and ate some of the cheese with a smile.)

@CuddleDuncan You're closer to Iceland than I am. Try some hakarl. B) I'll wait to hear your thoughts lol

@Jubal I had to look that one up. It sounds as bad as lutefisk, which I haven't tried either.

But before we get too far into disgusting foods, the whole point is that it's all in your head. Fruit can be horrific, insects can be delightful.

  • I've had fried/seasoned meal worms and crickets while visiting my wife's family. The meal worms were delicious, crickets, not so much... the wings stick to the top of your mouth...

@CuddleDuncan , I can't stand the smell of durian, but I have tried it while my allergies were acting up (couldn't smell them) and it actually tasted pretty good. BTW, we have several durian trees growing at our farm overseas.

  • I did accidentally eat ants once. Woke up one early morning. Was super sleepy and could barely keep my eyes open. Made myself some of the most delicious pancakes I’d ever had. As I was about 3/4’s of the way done I suddenly glanced at the syrup because it kind of looked weird. Then it dawned on me 😱😱😱…there were ants in the syrup….thousands of them!!!

  • @IsMeArrggh - I keep my syrup in the refrigerator.

  • I went to Peru with some friends, and a few of my friends got these grubs on the stick. My one friend was eating it and said wow it’s so good and then he said what is it. We said it’s grubs, he said what is grubs. Unfortunately we all laughed because we thought everybody knew what a grub was. So then we took him around the corner to show him that pan of floating bugs. He spit out the grub. I said I thought you said it was good. He said I didn’t know I was eating a bug. We just had to laugh it was so funny .

My son has eaten a slug for $50 and a beetle for 50 bucks. He said they were both disgusting because they weren’t fried or dipped into sauce or coated with chocolate. He said when he bit into the hard shell that gooey creepy body just exploded in his mouth he said it was so disgusting . So I would only eat bugs if I absolutely had to. I think I’d rather eat grass, bark and dirt first.

  • I don't even like chocolate truffles, so I know I don't want to eat a hard-shell bug with a gooey inside @KozyKim Lol.

@cuddles_ndream I rather eat insects that raw coconut. Eating coconut is like eating hair. That texture...ugh.

@bekah_cuddles You must have had some hard jobs if that was the easiest $1 you ever made. Lol.

@Charlie_Bear Potato bugs are super creepy. If that's all there was to eat, I might keep trying to fill up on water.

I love watching this video of how to prepare an isopod for dinner, although I nearly barf every time I watch it. The gross begins at 4:55.

This thing is basically just a giant water pill bug. It seems like a whole lotta work work work work work for just the little bit of grey goo you get out of it.

I'd much rather cuddle with @bekah_cuddles than eat a bug for $1.

  • @achetocuddle really? 😅😅 I think I would drink coconuts water every single day and eat it once a week if they didn’t charge $5.00 for it here 😒 I just can’t picture myself eating something where back in the islands is literally abundant everywhere and cost $30 pesos lol and no I’m not drinking that processed VitaCoco lol

  • I would be willing to try, but unsure if I would include insects into a regular diet. I try to never say never (except in this statement, lol).

  • @IsMeArrggh That story made me laugh out loud about the ants in your syrup.

  • Possibly chocolate 🍫 covered in the future! Lol 😂 but for now no.

  • I guess when you think about it, what's the difference between a bug or a fish or turkey. Don't tell me the obvious. Both creatures are alive before they reach your plate. I've had crickets before. An ice cream truck was giving away free cones in midtown a little while ago. The catch was the ice cream was covered in dead crickets. I couldn't resist. It didn't taste bad.

  • @KozyKim, it’s definitely funny now, but at the time and the sudden realization was disgusting…but my pancakes were sooo delicious!

  • A good April fools trick would be to chocolate cover the ants and say there’s chocolate chip pancakes and see if anybody notices🤣

I ate some bugs in Thailand at the market. I don't mind eating them but I don't go out of my way to put them in my diet. I do have a friend that collects the larvae from her compost pile and eats them, which I think is pretty neat. At the Earthship Academy I saw cricket flour. More protein!

  • I have been chastised before for my criticism on why people ask such STUPID questions and have pointless, time wasting, mind numbing surveys that clog the bandwidth of the internet and have nothing to do with this cuddle culture. I’m not gonna do that here. I’ve learned my lesson.

  • Aw, man. We'll never know whether @WestsideMarc would be down to snack on some tasty bugs during a cuddle. Darn.

I thought everyone ate an insect as a kid?? I mean we even had a book growing up called “Chocolate Covered Ants”. And you’re telling me no one’s drunk the tequila with the worm in it? Lol

I always remember the sucker that looked like amber with the scorpion in the middle. Those were a staple of my childhood. Malls would sell the suckers

As an adult I’ve learned that insects pack a protein punch and in a pinch they’re a great way to go. Also I remember watching the show TABOO and the episode where they talked about that rich secret society in NY that every month they have delicacies prepared from different places around the world and that often included bugs.

I haven’t ever had to eat a bug (again I’d do it as a kid because of candy) and neither do I plan on doing it anytime soon but at least I know if it came down to it not only could I but I would, lol.
