People purge/cleanse

Every so often I go through my phone and social media sites and remove people. Everyone that’s removed is removed for a reason, it’s not random. Call it a people purge or cleanse, whatever you want to call it. It always feels so amazing to do this. Do any of you ever do anything similar to this?

Yes. I barely go on FB nowadays anyways, though I might - the people we haven't spoke for years which could take me from maybe 200 "friends" to like 50, some might readd me and still not make the effort to interact or talk too. :P :)

Perhaps there's an opposite of that too where people having an "adding addiction/the "need" for social popularity" and they've thousands of "friends". :/

Edit: At this point I don't even like the changes they've made to Facebook though maybe some day they'll make changes I'll like. I use other platforms to keep in contact with close friends and the value I find in keeping Facebook is keeping track of my interests, likes, etc. :)

  • I really am going to seem like a boring ornery old fart when I say this, but I have never done social media in my entire life, no FB, MS, SN, what have you. Nothing. In fact I'm surprised with myself that I ever even came on this site as I have never joined an online community or online dating or social site. I am a member of City Data, which essentially I joined to research other cities and towns that I considered moving to or visiting, but that is not a very active site at all. Mostly for info seekers.

  • Pm Vines..those of us that stay off FB statistically are happier! !

  • I agree, I see people get so bent out of shape over social media, constantly paying attention to what others are doing and what others think of them, and putting their entire lives out there for others to see. Kinda gives me the creeps.

I have no set schedule for when I do this. If a Facebook "friend" hasn't known me most of my life, and I deem associating with him/her to be lacking purpose, I am quick to unfriend. The only other social network I really use anymore is LinkedIn. There, if one of my connections is someone I don't think will lead me to the kind of job I really wanna work, I am quick to remove him/her. I have deleted my accounts with ALL other social media and feel a deep sense of relief after having done that.

  • Lol

    apvalerius means business. :)

  • I would really love to go the way of @Pmvines and not be on social media. I am at my happiest in those times when I delete the apps off of my phone and ignore them.

I've often wondered what percentage of real friends a person would have left, of their fb friends, if they only kept actual friends on there

  • When you say actual friends do you mean real friends vs aquaintences or people they don’t even know? I ask cause I have several people I know but my list of real friends is extremely small.

@Morpheus. I call them Friends and friends. The problem I have with social media is the friends of friends. Just because I had coffee with my neighbor’s daughter’s ex-husband’s step mother, doesn’t mean I need or want to accept a friend request from the guy who mows the lawn of the step mother’s Pastor.

  • @Greybeard great example and yes I have a lot of those lol

  • I have been a member of a couple of polyamory social sites for a while. Last week, I finally broke down and signed up on Facebook due to family pressure. I'm having a hard time getting used to it.

@Greybeard is not a Facebook fan. In another life I was charged with the task trying to save jobs for public school employees who had gotten in trouble for inappropriate conversations with students. It’s not worth the trouble.

@morpheus real friends or at least folks you talk to on a regular basis
