How many languages do you speak?

I speak 2, English and Spanish. I’m half white and half Mexican. English is my first language but I spent a lot of time growing up with my Abuelita (Mexican Grandmother) and learned Spanish from her. Ironically none of my Abuelitas four children including my Mother, learned Spanish.

    One and a bit....though at one point I was pretty good with japanese. Good enough to hang out with people who didn't speak english and have actual conversations.

    Primarily I can really only speak English but I know bits and pieces of several languages and am really good with numbers, I can count pretty high in French or Spanish and up to 10 in German. Probably doesn't count for much really but I like to show this off anyway ;)

    Speak 1 English. I know some French, Spanish and Chinese. I am better at reading French or spanish than speaking. I also studied ancient greek.

    Like so many Americans, I only speak English. But I did have four years of Latin in high school, and while I was far from the star pupil, that helps me to make some limited sense out of written Spanish and Italian and to a lesser extent others. I’ve always had some auditory interpretation issues. Spoken Spanish sounds like gibberish, though I can figure out a lot of simpler written Spanish. But I have the same problem with understanding musical lyrics in English. My brain doesn’t sort it well.

    @Greybeard Latin really does help with the Romance languages. Like you, I can (more or less) make sense of written Spanish, French, etc., but I'm pretty much lost when I hear it spoken. I'd say:

    English — Good
    Japanese — Fair
    Latin — Poor

    I wanted to learn Chinese, but it turns out I can't hear the tones. Or maybe I hear them, but my brain won't interpret them for me? That seems more likely, since I know my ears work fine. In any case, I had to give up on speaking Chinese....
    [resigned shrug] Oh well. At least I speak Human with reasonable fluency, and that's the important thing.

    English is obviously my first language. But in addition to that I can speak a little broken Spanish(as in I fill in unknown words with English ones.) I can understand it if spoken slooooowly. Lol. I speak a little bit of German. Really just enough to be polite and take their order at a delicatessen I used to work at. :) I have thought about throwing myself into a country and sink or swim language wise and learn that way.

    I picked up a little Afrikaans, which is a South African language. Its sort of a Dutch with German influenced language. My sons mom was from Capetown.

    I think I'd have to classify what I speak as Texican rather than English, but I am capable of speaking English if I set my mind to it. I know a bit of Espanol, but usually people speak it too fast for me to understand it. I really liked @cuddlebugtm's answer of piglatin and sarcasm, so I'll add those in as well.

    4/5 decent. 6th would be a bit of various languages. I am working on evermore strengthening my existing 5 and learning at least 3 more. :)

    English, a decent amount of French, some Russian and German, and ok I’m going to count it: Klingon. (I’m going for my first Klingon fluency certification soon. Qapla’!)

    And if we count programming languages, std::cout << “Well I speak Klingon, you could probably infer I’m a tech loser too.” << std::endl;

    holy crap you know some klingon? Also russian is pretty cool, I'd love to know more but finding russian native speakers where I live is really difficult.

    @JasonCuddles it’s actually a fairly developed language, Mark Okrand (the creator) is a real linguist. You might need to say something in a more roundabout way, especially if it’s an animal because there wouldn’t be dogs or cats on Qo’noS but you can definitely communicate with it. There’s even an effort to translate the works of Shakespeare into Klingon, y’know because of the “in its original Klingon” comment. I own Khamlet myself.

    haha speaking klingon is like esperanto but slightly more useful. If I were really good with language I might pick it up but I have a hard enough time learning the ones I am interested in that are really used. Wish I were better but cout << c++ is easy compared to an organic language for me :(

    @curiousgeorge1 I bought AllAccess but I haven’t gotten around to any of the second season yet. The long Klingon diatribes are totally fan service, but hey I’m a fan.

    How do you feel about Star Trek as action though?
