What happened to the NY meet up ?

I showed up and didn't see anyone.

  • I was a little late. But I expected to see some people.

  • There was a shooting in the park (didn't involve any of the attendees) and people left early.

  • It was only called until 5, I think you got there a bit too late.

  • Hi all. I locked the thread and temporarily hid it for the time being. Unfortunately there were a fair number of people that were in your situation that showed up around the time when we needed to leave unexpectedly.

Makes it feel like the attendees did something wrong when an entire thread is locked away and hidden and no one can comment on the original thread.

  • I'm so grateful no one from out community was injured! I can only imagine how horrifying that must have been for everyone....
It feels concerning that nothing was said to those of us who were planning to come later. I luckily heard about it from someone who was already there, but it feels dangerous that there wasn't any communication about the incident to alert us to stear clear.

^^^ the thread was just locked away. That’s like the last thing you’re supposed to do in a case where multiple people are still on their way.

  • I came at 2:30 after the shooting and the event was wrapped down around 4:15. The original thread was locked down shortly after. It was still nice to meet the people who were still there and I feel sad for those who saw the shooting. I hope there's another NYC event soon.

  • People experience a traumatic event as a collective and the first response is to lock it up and hide it away, on a site meant to cuddle & comfort.

  • Everyone's traumatized and it's hard to decide what's best to do.

  • @PrettyLuv The irony is not lost.

  • The situation was under control in a few minutes, though it was pretty scary when the guy was walking around after the incident and the cops hadn't captured him just yet. Everyone acted very admirably and looked out for each other as we were exiting the vicinity. No one did anything wrong in that situation, and a lot of people went above and beyond looking after people.

And no one did anything wrong making judgment calls to not post to not cause any additional confusion, though hindsight can always reveal ways one might have acted differently knowing what they know now. The most important thing is that folks from here are fine, and let's pray for healing and peace and that folks can be strengthened in compassion from this!

    Very scary wow

  • The response to lock this thread and hide it sends a horrific message to victims of trauma that in the face of trauma one should be silenced and isolated in their emotions rather than seeking help or being able to at least talk about it with others. Women are already scarce on this site. That response is so triggering to any woman who knows what it means to feel hidden, isolated or silenced when they did nothing wrong or when someone tries to brush a crime under the rug in an effort to hide it from others. It’s so wrong on so many levels, the response to this trauma on a site of “comfort”.

For those that are triggered, I hope you do know it’s okay to speak up after a trauma and you have every right not to be silenced and to be comforted in every way through it and it’s not okay for anyone to try to suppress or silence you in coming out of it.

I hope everyone that attended is okay emotionally. Sorry we can’t express our condolences on the original thread but especially for those visiting, I hope you all still have a nice time in the city.

  • It was scary enough for some of those who were there, there's no need to traumatize everyone around the site. Just my humble opinion.
