Hello everybody! I had the privilege of attending the Kentucky Derby last year in a private suite and it was amazing. I have been a fan of the derby for many years.......... If you were to look at the horses racing on Saturday, who would you pick?
I watch it every year because my mom and aunt are from Kentucky and they absolutely love it. They dress up and the mint juleps are flowing. I also bet on the winner last year so that was a nice surprise considering those crazy odds 😅 I am looking forward to this Saturday!

I lived for a year in KY in the mid 90s, working at horse farms during an exchange program. I used to go to Keeneland a lot but never made to the Derby. I've been out of this game for a long time, but I go for an exacta and choose Tapit Trice and Two Phil's.
In the CC name game, I'm in for "disarm," as in "dis arm's made for cuddlin'," but personally, Cyclone Mischief tickles my funnybone. 😁

For years I watched every minute of the network TV pre race show through the end of the post race ceremony. I skip a lot of that now and just watch the race. I always wanted to go see this and The PGA Masters live. I went to The Masters a few years ago but have not yet gone to the Derby.

There has been a lot of discussion this year on breakdowns and track surfaces contributing to this.
Working a sixth night shift now accommodating the influx of people and demand for services.
Tomorrow I do not even plan to leave the house.
I don't care who wins as long as they all come through the race sound and healthy.
For the most part the public only watches three races. The Derby, The Preakness and The Belmont.
I'm more of a Cane Pace or Hambletonian Trot individual myself. Less drama , breakdowns and bad press.

@Devin88 More of a guess, I think. But I took a quick look at the 5-6 favorites and liked the pedigree of my 2 horses better. I loved the Bluegrass state, have wonderful memories.
Professional horse racing is about multi-millionaires and billionaires’ bragging rights.
@BoomerSpooner I disagree. One of the recent Derby winners had over 4500 owners due to a process called Microshares. A lot of ordinary people can have interests in these horses. And the thrill of laying down $2 for a chance of getting the winner right is a cheap thrill.

I realize this thread isn't about books, but I just finished this really amazing book called "Horse" by Geraldine Brooks about Lexington one of the greatest racehorses of the 1800's. He was the reason the stopwatch was invented! I just wanted to share it in case any of you fans are interested in feeding your passion.
@Joe82_ Naming the exception to the rule doesn’t change my opinion. My brother is a veterinarian to thoroughbreds and for breeders and the clients are very wealthy with incredible egos. Yes, it has made him financially comfortable but to this day he is extremely uncomfortable with how the horses are treated in many circumstances and he would tell you he practices veterinary medicine against his better angels.
As far as micro shares, the horses are still owned by the super rich and micro shares allow them to pay for expenses while still reaping the lion’s share of the profits. They pitch it to the little people as ownership but it isn’t. You receive a minute share of the winnings while subsidizing a rich man’s hobby.
You can argue but I am just giving you my informed opinion.

I wanna be a millionaire or billionaire. If I ever make it to the top, I'm going to buy [tag removed] his very own horse that he can race at the Kentucky Derby. He can name the horse [horse name removed], if he wants.

I just can’t get behind this. Horse racing is animal abuse for human entertainment.
