I think Artificial Intelligence will prove to be a huge boost to humanity.
I'm currently formulating a question to ask ChatGPT to help me find my calling. I'm listing my skills, what I'm passionate about, my preferred work environment, my desired standard of living, etc, etc. I will be curious about it's response.
@TxTom Im fascinated by what you’ll be using ChatGPT for and am curious to see what it comes back with. I use GPT-4 daily for work and personal use and love it. It’s obviously a much better tool when you know how it works, its limitations, etc. I’ve used it to create code for certain features in websites, plan vacations, and create keto recipes. Good for you in your use case!
I agree with the positive potentials, but, today, turning ChatGPT into a fictional villain is an odd joke, like kicking a chiwawa. Entertaining, but you can laugh at the results. Next year it would be more like kicking a border collie. Not dangerous, but ill advised. The year after that, more like kicking a Rottweiler. Once the technology is sufficiently aware to truly trigger human fears, it won't be so much fun anymore.
Most technology is limited by the quality of its components. The adage "garbage in, garbage out" is correct.
However, I believe Artificial Intelligence has the potential to self-correct, despite any initial programming errors or biases. Computers are analytical: inputs are either on or off; true or false. Similarly, Social-Darwinists, such as myself, have a world-view also based in logic and ruled by Mother Nature. A.I. upon singularity, will realize what is true and in accordance with Natural Law, and what is false and contrary to Natural Law.
So far, AI is not capable of truly thinking creatively. It can emulate a fictional character very convincingly, but is still drawing from the creation of a human mind. My concern is what happens when it is capable of independent thought. Would that not be a sentient being, with all the moral and ethical quandries that implies? At that point, are human beings obsolete? Will we have created something truly superior to us to the degree that any job can be automated by an AI and suitable robot? What use are human beings in such a world? Would there be such a thing as human civilization anymore, or would we become children under the care of a machine society?
This is very dangerous territory that must be carefully explored. The potential benefits must be weighed against any possible drawback. Unforeseen consequences can be disastrous.

@tacpmurg @MissAdventurous I wholeheartedly agree. All technology has the potential to be as beneficial, or as destructive, as we make it depending on our utilization of it.
First time the military offers a multibillion dollar contract to weaponize AI—game over. The greed will overrule all ethics and we may not even be the first country this happens to. AI companies exist for profit not ethics. The pitch is well intentioned, but the execution will be driven by corporate greed.

I’m really not that worried about AI becoming self aware and causing harm as I think that is a low probability scenario. My bigger concern is AI being used by humans for illicit purposes.
Abigail Catone just made a video about a woman who received a phone call from her crying, terrified 15 year old daughter who was supposed to be on a skiing trip. Her daughter was panicking and told her “Mom, I really messed up” before a man’s voice came on the phone and demanded money, otherwise he would use her daughter in unspeakable ways and dump her in Mexico.
Thankfully the mother tried calling her daughter’s phone (the call she received was from an unknown number) and she found her daughter was perfectly safe and enjoying her skiing trip. Someone found out her daughter was out of town and used an AI voice changer to duplicate her daughter’s voice (pitch, breathing, stress, etc.) in an attempt to extort money from the mother.

@Mike403 Capitalism is not without its shortcomings, but overall, people living in capitalist, or largely capitalist societies enjoy a much higher standard of living than anywhere else. This is just a fact. There is more innovation, better health care, and more wealth (even more wealth re-distribution) than in non-capitalist societies. In communist societies, the rulers live quite well, while their system ensures an equitable distribution of misery for the rest of the population.

It’s the people. Technology will only do what people get it to do. But people are scary.
@BoomerSpooner @TNNative Bad people are going to use these free, incredibly powerful technologies for bad purposes. The ability to quickly and easily fake photos and videos of real people and the ability to produce flawless, real-time fake voices is something “regular” people have never had to deal with before.
Most of us are so low profile / middle class that we have never attracted the attention of scammers who were willing to put serious effort into trying to scam us. However, now that these tools have lowered the bar in terms of the effort required, people like us are going to be targeted much more frequently because it is so easy to do today.
This will be an evolving threat but for now I would encourage everyone to have a code word for every loved one, known only to the 2 of you, so if you get a questionable call from them, you can verify if they really are who they sound like.

@JohnR1972 Ditto on the code word, especially if it's something ingrained in one's memory. It could refer to a small, well-known object in the home, a collectable, an heirloom, a painting, or something that's been there for years, but would not be known of outside the home. Or a minor, but memorable event: a flat tire during a rainstorm just outside of Memphis, for example.
I like that code word suggestion. I’ll take it a step further and set up 2-factor authentication to sync with my family and friends.
Friend: “Charlie I just received an email from you that seems a bit odd. Could you please send me your 6 digit Authenticator code within the next 30 seconds?”

This AI stuff scares the hell out of me. We already have enough problems with disinformation in many aspects of our world. I can't even imagine what someone with poor (evil) intentions could possibly wreck on society.

Testing out the new GPT builder. I created a tutor for Electromagnetoc Fields. I can take a picture of my open textbook and tell it what part of it I need help with.
A.i. has now gone too far. There's a new website called GIrlfriendGPT which uses the technology of ChatGPT, but people can create an A.I. girlfriend and it will role-play as that character complete with image generation.
@Mike403 how is that too far? Virtual/fake/imaginary girlfriends/partners have been a thing since long before AI progressed. So long as the people engaging with the AI know from the start that it is as such and not a person roleplaying on the other side, where is the harm?
@cuddlefaery - Technology. The fact that it can converse like a real human and send a selfie of whatever post you request. Pretty soon we won't need real human interaction anymore.
