Cuddling family members

What is everyone’s thoughts on cuddling with family members? There are obviously many parents that cuddled with their children which is considered normal. Do any of you have any examples or thoughts on cuddling between adult family members? Do you think it’s okay or is is strange?

Whenever my family gets together to watch a movie, we all cuddle in one big pile on (and around) the couch—adults, children, and all. It never occurred to me that this might be weird. I mean, how else are we all going to fit? Besides, it's cosy. If you can't cuddle platonically with family (born or chosen), who can you cuddle platonically with?

  • Apart from a hug I am not comfortable with cuddling my family members

@pmvines Is it just because you're not close, or...?

  • No, just didn't grow up being affectionate with my family members. A little bit at arms length, not necessarily not close though

Huh. Well, here's another difference between my childhood and the childhood of others, which I didn't consider as a possibility at all. People who aren't me are fascinating!

Now that I think about it, if you didn't grow up in a family so large and a house so small that the kids sometimes had to share beds (which most people didn't), it makes perfect sense that you might not be as matter-of-factly comfortable cuddling with your various family members as someone who did grow up that way would be. This is actually completely obvious, yet I somehow missed it.

    Thanks, @pmvines.

  • I cuddle with my family . My daddy lives with me and I often cuddle with him and watch a movie . The other day I had a tough day and I just needed a hug from my dad ! When I get together with siblings we cuddle . It’s not rare even the boys will cuddle up with dad . I think it’s beautiful and healthy !!

I’m like @pmvines ... wasn’t brought up with affection and it seems an alien thing to do with my family.

  • My mother says she cuddled with all 4 of us kids but I honestly don't remember that. If you were to observe my family you'd generally see miles between us when hanging together in the same room. I've always been the black sheep so I'm completely different than all of my other siblings so you put us together and almost always someone is fighting or holding a grudge.

In terms of my son. He was 2 months premature. So I guess you can say technically I was introduced to touch therapy almost 3 years ago when I would make the 30min drive every day for a month where I was only allowed to hold him for an hour a day with skin to skin contact. Every day now I make a point to caress or hold him in some way for as long as he allows me. I have no intention of ever stopping that as he gets older.

@AshleyCuddles Whoa. He's so tiny and precious.

  • @DarrenWalker thank you! Little man was 4lbs 9oz when he was born which was huge considering his gestation.

Well not comfortable and no. It doesn't mean I can't cuddle friends/others Platonically.

There are also religious teachings and such which past a certain age family members must keep to themselves. Not saying I believe or disbelief, just introducing that some times it's beyond just the persons involved and what they want//don't want.

For me there are distances which are 'unresolvable' too, all the more reasons I keep to myself. I also grew up showing loving through actions - not so much with words - barely with physical affection. Especially as I grew older, it's become mainly giving love through my actions.

Though I am learning and incorporating various forms of showing love into my life. :)

That's great, I can imagine on lookers and others wondering how you two are so close. Your story is that he fought for his life and you were by him so now you're so grateful, not only he's your son, though he was a fighter from day one. It's also great that you're aware and willing to hold back your love expressions when he needs that. :)
