Utilizing an "adult doll" for cuddling

edited July 2023 in General

Okay. Please hold on and hear me out. I intend this topic in the most respectful way possible. I am also not implying that my topic is ever a full substitution for contact with IRL cuddlers. I have paid for sessions with members on this website that were incredible. But, I felt really excited to share my positive experience with you guys and gals who might be more understanding and supportive than anyone else in my life that I can talk to about this. I know there's a lot of stigma around it.

A few years ago, when I had more income, I purchased a life size "adult doll." It's mostly been in storage. Recently, I've found myself more depressed and seeking solutions for touch starvation and cuddling from others. This isn't something I can afford to do on a consistent basis. Sometimes, I really have trouble falling asleep when feeling lonely. My wife and I are splitting up and I've been living on the couch for the past 6 months. I also suffer from drug-resistant Epilepsy and it's something that has introduced a lot of extra stress into my life.

Recently, I have discovered that using my doll for spooning has been a somewhat effective solution for the times that I have trouble falling asleep and would normally be feeling so lonely that I end up crying. I simply have it next to me in a spooning position and put it's arm around me, helping me feel safe and at peace.

Again, I am not suggesting anyone use this as a substitution for the services provided by this website, but I've found it to be a helpful "bridge" between the real cuddle sessions I can afford with members here.

I'm also not suggesting anyone purchase an "adult doll" unless it's something that feels right for you. But, I felt excited to share my positive solution for my persistent loneliness when trying to fall asleep. If this is something you already own, then you might consider using it for this purpose. I hope this post helps someone here.

Mods, please remove this post if you feel it to be inappropriate for this forum. I checked the rules and couldnt find any that I thought this would be breaking. I have also proofread this post about 5 times before submitting it, trying to evaluate it in an unbiased way.

Edit: Yes, I do see a therapist twice a week and she thinks this is a good idea for a temporary solution.

Edit2: Like I said, this was something I could afford before I had to stop working because of my epilepsy. I'm just hoping it's an idea that could help someone else in a similar situation as mine.

  • I'm curious how different cuddling a human-sized doll would be from say cuddling a body pillow? Do you think it's because it has a more recognizable form that your brain is able to bridge the gap more easily?

  • edited July 2023

@cuddlefaery I also have a body pillow but I truly find that putting an arm and hand around me is very helpful. I would also agree with the second question you posed. It probably does have a subconscious impact on my sensation of safety. Sometimes I will also bend the legs to match the bend in mine.

Thank you for not telling I'm a weirdo or something. I was really nervous to share this.

  • People have been using these dolls to sneak into carpool lanes...

  • @Ripley54566 I'm sorry if this seems weird. Like I said, I felt that this was the only place I could really share this with people who might understand my motivation without negative judgment.

  • Many of us seek cuddling because we are lonely and/or missing touch. If you find comfort in a doll or other artificial thing like one those ai companions who is anyone here to judge ?
You're not harming anyone. So as they say you do you.
At least you won't have to deal with tipping requests or rising costs of cuddling :)
But I think the best dolls are quite pricey so it might take a while to be cost effective.

It would not help me one bit. What I miss is the actual human contact

  • @MrAdmirer I do agree and wish that sessions with cuddlers here was something I could afford more often. 😔

  • edited July 2023

I did once briefly consider this, but the cost nixed it immediately so I never got to the stage of giving it serious thought.

I did try experiments with pillows and cushions a couple of times, as a proxy for a body pillow, but it didn't help so I abandoned the idea. But I can absolutely see that any of these things might work for some people.

For what it's worth, I think it was a good post @Briiyan. Certainly very nicely written!

@Melancholy One of my favorite things to do is tip well in any environment that it's expected. I love seeing the surprise and excitement from the recipient. I used to do tech support and helping others feel happy is one of the greatest things in life. ❤️
Thank you for not negatively judging me about this.

  • edited July 2023

@CuddleDuncan I agree about the affordability. That is why I tried to mention that it was something I already owned and had purchased a few years ago. It's definitely not a substitution, but is a somewhat effective "bridge" between the sessions I can afford with my current income.

Just curious...what does your wife say when she wakes up earlier than you and finds you on the couch spooning [an “adult doll”]?

@SunsetSnuggles She doesn't mind. She doesn't really care about me in any way anymore. We are very "open" about [our relationship]. About three years ago I was supportive of her finding other additional […] partners, which she has taken advantage of, yet I have not. We've been married for 9 years and I wanted her to be able to have access to new and exciting passion in her life. We've actually utilized the doll in a couple of our own experiences together. She enjoyed it.

I voluntarily live on the couch, in an effort to give her her own space. She has also had partners come over […], so [our room is] not a place I want to sleep anymore.

It's visionary and allows others who love and understand you to feel loved and cared for in return. Thanks for making a place where the love we feel can physically manifest itself close by, even though we are far apart. Keeping this as your focus will attract a more loving and caring future. You're doing the right thing. You are loving yourself and those of us that love you into a better place.

  • @PeopleLikeUs Thank you so much for your positive and supportive response.

This is something I've been considering sharing on this forum for a few days, but have been nervous about the possible insults and negativity.

  • [Deleted User]Mman (deleted user)

I feel that if this is comforting for you and is meeting your needs then go for it. You are harming no one and taking care of yourself. That should be your priority.

  • An inanimate object won't help me.

  • edited July 2023

People substitute many things depending on their needs - we all need to feel connected, just in different ways. For some people pets fill that need. For others their children do. For some connecting virtually creates the sense of intimacy they need. For others, hugging pillows and stuffies can create the sense of comfort they crave.

I wouldn't suggest someone spend the money on [an “adult doll”] when they can hire a real live professional cuddler for less than or the same cost.... But if you already have one for other purposes, why not make use of it?

I learned as a teen that text imagery and roleplay is enough for me to build an incredible sense of connection and tactile sensation with others. Words really get to me.... I'm an avid, voracious reader with an overactive imagination so it's no surprise that virtual cuddling even by text works extremely well for me. Add video and voice and my mind can create the sensory experience almost as complete as actually being in-person. It's made long distance relationships a lot more bearable, and been super helpful during long illnesses and now the pandemic.

Edit: side note - I learned a few years ago that this trait makes me highly suggestible to hypnosis even though I'm a huge skeptic to most of it 😅 brains are cool

  • Have you considered moving out? It seems like the doll is an escape from an existing high stress environment that you’re seeking some comfort from by any means. The doll sounds like a comfort, much like a teddy bear, but the situation you’re in sounds a bit toxic to the mentality seeing as you’re not actively having sex with others while your wife is…while in your home and in your bed and in your presence. I think that would cause anyone who hasn’t signed on to that from the get go, a bit of emotional turbulence.

I wonder if you’d feel as inclined to the doll once out of that situation.

  • edited July 2023

@PrettyLuv & @jplemmon Yes. Moving out is something I've been trying to do. I know it's a toxic environment here. Unfortunately, I have been running into some different issues with that.

In order for me to be removed from our current lease, she needs to have enough income to qualify as the sole person responsible for the lease. To do that, she needs to have paystubs for 2.5x the current rent.

Additionally, because of my seizures I'm not allowed to drive anymore. So, that means I've been trying to find an affordable place that is close to things like a grocery store, pharmacy, etc. Denver is quite expensive.

  • I agree with @PrettyLuv ... i think getting your needs met is all well and good. However, if it's a placebo to avoid making necessary life changes it may not be a true fix. Are you planning on living with your situation as it is?

  • @Briiyan Coming from someone who lives right next to Denver it is expensive as hell...everywhere here. :(

  • Is she willing to fit the bill while you stay on the lease, only in name, until it expires? Do you have a family friend or somewhere else to crash & decompress from the situation while you find another place?

In regards to the seizures, there’s an herbal concoction that’s known to work miracles on seizures. Some have said they’ve never had a seizure again after taking it. I don’t know if you’d want to look into it. Interestingly enough it’s known to cure asthma & has helped people recovering from strokes as well. Feel free to DM if interested.

  • @Briiyan I think it is incredibly wonderful that you are willing to be vulnerable enough to share something even though others might make fun of it or sexualize it or go so far as to call it "weird" and I am sending you some virtual hugs. I'm glad you have found this community and hope that it can help you connect along with all of the other things you are doing for your health and wellness.

I intend this topic in the most respectful way possible. I am also not implying that my topic is ever a full substitution for contact with IRL cuddlers.

Thank you for being sensitive and also showing that you are trying to be honest and find balance between the possibility for real connections and what to do in between to find the comfort that you need. I think its a beautiful thing when someone finds new ways to advocate for themselves.

Again, I am not suggesting anyone use this as a substitution for the services provided by this website, but I've found it to be a helpful "bridge" between the real cuddle sessions I can afford with members here.
Edit: Yes, I do see a therapist twice a week and she thinks this is a good idea for a temporary solution.

I for one appreciate the fact that you (and your therapist) see this as ONE option in order to help your life's stress. I have a family member that has struggled with epilepsy for her whole life and it is a very challenging "invisible" illness and finding ways to have less stress is a HUGE step in the controlling of episodes.

I REALLY appreciate your willingness to share and I'm here to tell you it takes a LOT of courage so thank you for being brave and for being aware that it might be inappropriate and asking the mods help you. Not everyone is as mindful or diligent about posting things that might be problematic.

I know you are fairly new and I see you are in CO. I wanted to also offer up another option that maybe you have never tried. Its not my job to try and fix your life or your marital situation or your housing options.... but like you have done here, I'd like to offer up a possible "bridge" between cuddles with pro's or enthusiasts.

There is a fabulous community of snuggly peeps that get together for a FACILIATED cuddle party where people can learn, grow, heal, and find some therapeutic touch with other human beings. Its usually only $25 and I know the facilitator personally has a desire to help people. When you figure that there are around 10-15 people who get together and cuddle for a few hours it is pretty good deal!! They usually happen a few times a month. But it just so happens there is one TOMORROW!! July 9.

    https://www.meetup.com/community-cuddles-meetup/events/294106928/

Sharing options about new ways to get the comfort you need to live a wholehearted life is a community wide goal.

Welcome to the site and as always.... May the Cuddle Gods be EVER in your favor!!

@Briiyan Hey man you sound like a really nice guy! I’m so sorry you’re going through such a shitty situation and have all of these different challenges.

I applaud your bravery and openness, and as completely and totally nauseated as I am with the overly used, overly touchy feely term “safe space”, this definitely applies here so no worries man, one is going to judge you here!

The only advice I would add here is if your wife having lovers over is demeaning, cuckoldish or bothers you on any level, I would ask her to take her activities offsite and not stick the situation in your face. If it doesn’t bother you, then let sleeping dogs lie.

Having said all that, I would be very happy to donate $40 towards your next pro cuddle and I challenge/invite anyone else here to do the same!

LMK how I can make that happen.

    Marc

  • I feel like this will become more popular especially with the development of AI. They will create experiences that mimick companionship of humans. Don’t think it would ever be the same though. Do you still see IRL cuddles, and if so why?

  • Watch “Lars and the Real Girl “

@carrieanne OMG I can’t believe I didn’t think of that! Great call! Yes, that is a fantastic suggestion @Briiyan that movie is extremely germane to this topic!!!! Spot on.
